Prismark10 Going for the Fast and Furious dollar, Biker Boyz is set in the Black community in Southern California. The vehicle of choice is motorbikes. We follow Kid (Derek Luke) the young motorcycle racer who wants to be 'King of Cali' the title held by Smoke (Laurence Fishburne) who is the leader of the Black Knights bike club.Smoke is reluctant to be challenged by the Kid and in response he starts his own club, the Biker Boyz as he sets out to be the fastest urban biker around. The film deals with racing camaraderie and rivalries as well as delving into father and son issues in a formulaic way but the racing scenes were insipid. It left me open mouthed to see how flatly they were filmed.
view_and_review Maybe Biker Boyz wasn't as good as I thought it was, but the fact of the matter is, I saw "Torque" before I saw Biker Boyz. And after having seen "Torque", any movie with street bikes in them that didn't run on pixie dust was going to be better. I honestly disregarded the acting and the plot to simply gawk at the bikes and what the riders would do on the bikes. There were some cool stunts and really pretty machines. Those bikes were so beautiful that I know it has skewed my judgment of the movie; but hey, at least I'm honest about it.The plot wasn't all bad... the racing aspect of it that is. Besides the racing for "lids" story, and trying to dethrone the top gun, the rest of the movie was just filler. "Biker Boyz" is decent enough to kill time.
MSUTee2005 Being a life-long motorcycle guy I loved this movie.-soapbox time- I realize that some people view motorcycles are two-wheeled machines of death, but in reality more people are hurt playing darts than riding motorcycles, and the majority of people that die riding motorcycles are people that haven't taken safety classes and aren't fully licensed. Motorcycles demand your full attention, but aren't as dangerous as everyone thinks. -off the soapbox-The movie does hit upon the fact that motorcycles can be dangerous, but thankfully doesn't spend the entire length of the film talking about it. The acting isn't top-notch, but the actors do a good enough job to not get in the way of the movie's events. Besides, if you are watching this movie, you're watching it because of the fact that it's about motorcycles and the culture, not because you're looking for an Oscar-worthy performance from any of the actors involved. I believe that the movie does a good job showcasing the machines and the motorcycle club culture. The film does suffer from some character development issues, but given the film's purpose, are ultimately forgivable.I slot this movie right between "2Fast 2Furious" and "The Fast and the Furious" in the quality continuum, with "The Fast and the Furious" being the best of the three. If you want a closer subject matter comparison, this movie is LEAGUES better than "Torque." This movie is much more realistic than that title.
Kingvagabond Biker Boyz is a film that is great despite its numerous flaws. The film is built using thousands of clichés and stereotypes untrue to the real world of street racing. However, despite its many flaws, which are numerous and obvious the films spirit is maintained and despite its poor score on IMDb viewed in the right way this film is incredibly good. There's a tendency to view a film coming out of the black community based on a mainly white area of life as poor before the film has even been watched. There's reasons for this and many films doing this are right to be critically panned. Some of the acting in the movie is poor, and whilst the plot is clichéd for the genre and the crew didn't do themselves any favours by not accentuating the emotional points of the plot, the film is still a solid and emotional drama. I gave this film 7 out of 10 due to the empathetic acting of Kid and Smoke (Fishbourne turns in a great performance) and hope that potential viewers aren't put off by the poor rating that it has received.
