tdrish Unique, interesting, fun, and quite entertaining, what's to bash about Brainscan? I don't know. Was Trickster just a little bit too annoying, or was it just me? And you guys lost a star from me, just for adding that song from Primus in there ( I absolutely HATE that group!) Edward Furlong stars as, oh, I forgot his name, it's been almost 25 years since I watched this, you know, you forget a name or two there. He thinks he's played every horror game under the sun, and he has, but he has no idea about the game Brainscan. He's refered to the game Brainscan by a friend, who assures him that the game takes gaming to the next level and beyond. So! He plays the game. He's instructed to choose his weapon for the game. Funny. The game looks like real life! I think he chooses a meat cleaver. Well, I'm not sure what the point or challenge of the game is, but supposedly, he only has like 24 or 48 hours to do whatever, I don't know, again, its been awhile since I watched this! When the game is on hiatus, he finds that the murder he committed in the game....really happened. Then comes the CD in the mail. He pope it in, and it seems the company knew exactly how much time he left to play the game, and he has to finish it. ( Sighs. Who markets this, anyway?) Will he win or lose? Do you care? I could be wrong, but I think Brainscan only worked for the time of its release. Meaning, it has no place in cinema today, or your living room. Strong efforts, wicked settings, and very unique concept set the bar high, nevertheless. I'm giving it 6 out of 10 stars. For this, I do forgive Furlong for Pet Semetary 2.
TheMarwood Looking like a cross between Alice Cooper and Joan Rivers, Trickster looks like the victim of a face-lift gone wrong and while not the least bit scary, he's played well by T. Ryder Smith as a campy mascot of a horror villain. It's directed with a strong enough hand by veteran John Flynn, who was simply accepting whatever job came his way at this point in his career. Edward Furlong is watchable enough as a horror fanatic who plays a virtual reality game where the game and reality blend into a pretty mild, but entertaining horror show. While director Flynn has nothing but ill words about his star: "Eddie Furlong was a 15-year-old kid who couldn't act. You had to "slap him awake" every morning. I don't want to get into knocking people, but I was not a big Eddie Furlong fan." Furlong's limited abilities fit into this B grade nonsense fine enough. As for the simplistic script by SEVEN writer Andrew Kevin Walker, this 'is it real or not' gimmick has no payoff and it's obvious from the start what the answer is. Brainscan is pretty dumb and derivative, but it's a passable way to kill some time.
trashgang lazy Sunday afternoon, and it's raining, what could you do, visit the inlaws or watch the first horror experience with your kids. Than this one is an ideal movie to watch. As said in the summary, pre SAW, why, well, the kid got involved in a video game were he has to kill people to survive. Once that's done the game really starts, there are witnesses. Kill them is your next mission. The movie isn't bad after all, it's made when horror was at his deepest point of boredom. There were sequels around that everybody hated. So this flick is a relief for that era. It's well done it's sometimes bloody but never gory, due the fact that kids are the main actors this film surely will do for the kids at home, I guess they should be 16 or older. It's a bit past the theme now but place yourself in that era, the start of games, online, the coming of the NET, interactive games. catch it if you can, not easy to find here in Europe, some video retailers will still have it, I bought a new VHS copy for a few cents, never regret that, enjoy the game...and when your children are older give them SAW
siderite This movie is not a great movie, but it has its merits. The slightly erotic and mysterious atmosphere a la Lost Boys boosts it the most, too bad they used just a little smudge of it and a lot more Elm Street tricky demon stuff. The plot is pretty predictable, but the script is decent and Edward Furlong is very suited to play the alienated youth obsessed by hard, but fake, horror movie scares. The music was also appropriate. It was interesting to see in a movie computer interfaces that even computers today don't have. The difference is that back then they couldn't do it and now nobody gives a damn anymore.Bottom line: I think it was so close to a cult classic. It is clearly underrated on IMDb and, except some silly scenes that could have been edited or completely removed, a decent thriller for teenagers. It doesn't scare so much as involves, which is something movies nowadays fail to do most of the time.
