David Traversa I'm totally overwhelmed. I just saw this movie on "You Tube" because after seeing "No se lo digas a nadie" I felt such an admiration for its director, Francisco Lombardi, that I had to see something else directed by him.I think this man is a genius, this film is memorable, it must be one of the best movies I've ever seen. The script is fabulous (of course, having its origin on a story by Mario Vargas Llosa it couldn't have been otherwise) and the transcript to the screen is superb. This shows us that the primordial importance for a movie to succeed it's to have a sound script and if there is a sound script in the history of movie-making, this movie has it.The story starts a parable that as an arch gradually hoops and by the end of the movie closes itself making a perfect circle. One of the most touching moments in the contemporary cinema is given here by the flickering little flame of a cigarette lighter when its light brings to our memory the remembrance of a loved one that by now is no more. Breathtaking.I don't have words to express my admiration for this movie, it's so sublime that it defies any description and my English is very limited. The actors spectacular, all of them (I'm so sorry, but I'm not familiar with their names) anyhow, it would be unfair to mention two or three names and leave all the others behind, because all of them were perfect in their roles. The irony poured by Vargas LLosa within this story, its bitterness and his knowledge of human behavior is overwhelming, and the masterly conduction of Francisco Lombardi, makes the end of this movie quite difficult to assimilate, it's too unjust (although perfectly realistic knowing the powers to be and their ways) and one would have liked something rosier, but then the whole purpose of the story would have been totally deceived. Please, for the life of me, DO NOT MISS IT!!!I feel I just saw a masterpiece of a movie.
lastliberal Now, having served 23 years in the military, I have never had the opportunity to have an assignment of this nature. Those damn officers get all the good jobs! I watched this because of Angie Cepeda (Love in the Time of Cholera), but was impressed with the performance of Salvador del Solar, who played the fortunate Captain who got this assignment.Watching him work out of his element, and try to keep his wife (Mónica Sánchez) happy while he was working with such incredible beauty as Cepeda, was a real thrill, and Solar was magnificent. The movie was very funny, as you would expect, especially from those who thought the whole idea sacrilegious. Maybe it was, but it solved the problem.A funny, romantic movie that never fails to amuse and entertain as we wonder if the Captain will falls into the Colombiana's (Cepeda) snares and lose his wife, whether the investigative reporter Sinchi (Aristóteles Picho) will expose the whole sordid mess, whether the Colombiana and Pechuga (Tatiana Astengo), who also loves the Captain will get into a fight, and how will his service record be after all this. Will he get a medal? Ah, the questions that must be answered.
malcolm3-2 A marvelous combination of story, direction and acting! The director, Francisco J. Lombardi, has apparently never directed a bad, or even mediocre movie - The author of the original story, Mario Vargas llosa, is widely acclaimed, and appropriately so.The casting is superb - no one will ever forget Angie Cepeda, as Columbiana - and Pochita ( Monica Sanchez ) can get mad as good as any actress to ever grace the Big Screen.Aristoteles Picho is perfect as "El Sinchi."The dialogue is extremely well done, judging from the English sub-titles. I assume the spoken Spanish is equally outstanding.Although a highly entertaining comedy, it appropriately reflects an underlying message regarding morality, the military and politics for those who care to observe and reflect. An essential addition to almost any DVD collection ( It is rated "R," but I would not call it a "hard" "R." )
George Parker "Pantaleon y las Visitadoras" tells of a gung-ho Peruvian Army Captain (del Solar) who is ordered to staff a small corps of happy hookers to improve morale at remote Amazon jungle military outposts. The extremely efficient, straight laced, married Captain, however, finds he has his hands full (in more ways than one) once his troop of hotties (aka: Pantyland) is deployed. With mixed reviews from the critics and respectable marks from the public, this fun little Peruvian dramady gets off to a slow start, runs a tad long at two hours, and is sexy, silly, sweaty, and sepia, making for a lukewarm watch which will appeal most to foreign film freaks into flicks from south of the border.
