Synopsis

A group of holidaymakers head for the Spanish resort of Elsbels for a 4-day visit. When they get there, they find the Hotel still hasn't been finished being built, and the weather is awful. And there is something strange about the staff—they all look very similar. To top it all off, the weather seems to be having an adverse affect on the Hotel's foundations.

IanPhillips Carry On Abroad stands as one of the best Carry On films. All of the team's favourite regulars are here, as well as some welcome guest stars, making for one of the largest casts put together in a 70s Carry On film. The usual batch of players that are present, and clearly on good form, are Sid James, Joan Sims, Kenneth Williams, Peter Butterworth, Charles Hawtrey, Barbara Windsor, Hattie Jacques, Kenneth Connor and Bernard Bresslaw. They are joined by Scottish comedian Jimmy Logan and a whole host of other familiar TV stars of the day, such as June Whitfield, Ray Brooks, Carol Hawkins, Derek Francis, Patsy Rolands, Sally Geeson and John Clive.Vic (Sid James) and Cora Flange (Joan Sims) join a pack of tourists on a package holiday deal to the Island of Elsbells. Vic's plans had already been scuppered as the holiday was originally intended to be a dirty weekend with his mistress, Sadie Tomkins (Babara Windsor), but all plans were thwarted after Cora (Joan Sims) decided she'd like to go on the holiday as well to keep a firm eye on her straying husband. Once all the tourists arrive at their destination, they are astounded to discover that the hotel is only half built and there are no more than three staff members (Peter Buterworth, Hattie Jacques and Ray Brooks). From there follows several comic mishaps that are all as predictable as ever yet remains a thoroughly entertaining watch. There's great fun to be had especially when the gang get arrested and end up spending a night in jail, following a fight that occurred outside a brothel. But it's the classic ending where the film really scores best as the hotel slowly begins collapsing around their ears. Only problem is, everyone is too drunk and feeling too amorous to even care. Peter Butterworth manically runs around trying to get everyone to vacate the building but his efforts fall on deaf ears. The film has a happy ending and the fun sequence where the gang are all reunited and decide to have a lock-in at Vic and Cora's pub is one of the best endings in a Carry On film, firmly holding onto that fine, feel-good spirit which would slowly dissolve from here on.The cast are all on usual form, though Peter Butterworth and Hattie Jacques are, perhaps, the best players here. They make a Laurel and Hardy-like duo and Jacques in particular is in an unusual role, playing a Spanish, downtrodden and utterly demented, cook. The rest of the cast certainly get their moments including Joan Sims in the hilarious umbrella sequence where she and Sid James are suddenly soaked from the roof collapsing during the storm of the last night just when they were planning a bit of "nookie". Priceless stuff! Kenneth Williams and Charles Hawtrey hilariously mince around during the majority of the film, putting in their more familiar characterisations, while Jimmy Logan is a welcome addition to the cast who provides sparkle in every scene he's in.All in all, Carry On Abroad was one of the last true great Carry On's. The series was on a slippery slope now and this would also be the last to feature Charles Hawtrey - a much loved regular in the series. Carry On Abroad was one of the greatest of all the 1970's Carry On's and proved to be another big smash hit at the Box Office. Great fun! Recommended.Ian Phillips
BA_Harrison The Carry On team tackle that other British staple of the 1970s, the package holiday to the Med for some sun, sea, and a bit of 'how's your father?'; the result is another seriously silly caper full of low-brow humour and cheap titillation that is more fun than doing a drunken flamenco on a tapas bar table. Olé!Kenneth Williams plays travel guide Stuart Farquhar (Stupid what?), who leads a troupe of happy-go-lucky holidaymakers to the resort of Elsbels. With Sid James, Charles Hawtree, Joan Sims, Babs Windsor, Kenneth Connor, and Bernard Besslaw amongst the travellers, hilarity is most definitely on the agenda, especially since the hotel they are booked into is not only seriously understaffed, but also isn't quite finished being built.Having left their inhibitions back in England, the Gang proceed to drink, fight and flirt their way through the week, getting in trouble with the local police, partaking of a suspicious looking aphrodisiac purchased on an excursion, and partying while the hotel collapses, all of which allows for plenty of smutty innuendo, daft slapstick, and a spot of welcome T&A from Carry On regular Windsor, babes Carol Hawkins and Sally Geeson, and total hottie Gail Grainger as Williams' sexy assistant Miss Plunkett.7.5 out of 10, rounded up to 8 for IMDb.
w22nuschler This is another fine movie from the early 70's from the Carry On gang before they got too dirty and raunchy. Sid James leads the way again as he is about to take a vacation alone. Turns out he was going on the same trip as Barbara Windsor, a woman he is flirting with in front of his wife. A friend lets the wife know she will be on the trip. She decides to go against his wishes. Joan Sims plays his wife as she usually does. It's always funny to see her try to keep Sid in line. Sally Geeson and Carol Hawkins play two hot-ties who are seen in various states of undress. I love Sally and Carol, they both have great bodies. Gail Grainger plays the roommate of Barbara Windsor, she also has a great body. Bernard Bresselaw plays the part of a monk, who is on vacation with his brothers at the same hotel. There are many funny moments as the hotel is not complete and people keep peeking in on everyone. Bernard keeps having run-in's with the young women and he keeps getting in trouble with the other monks. This movie flows so well that you want it to keep going. One of the best Carry On's.
VicTheDaddy I watched this film the other day, hoping to cheer my self up after paying a lot of money on getting my car repaired. And as usual it did the trick, well it did for a couple of hours. The film is fun from start to finnish,it has most of the regular cast, playing their usual parts. In this one Peter Butterworth gets to use a different accent, which he does to great comic effect. The only problem i found was that the version I've bought seems to have a scene missing,my wife thought the same thing.I do specifically remember a scene when they all go down the monks cave, and i think Sid James puts a monks robe on,and hands out wine.I cant remember exactly what happens,as i hadn't seen it for a few years, but i had seen it a few times before, and do definitely remember a scene like that.My wife and i were trying to remember what happens in that part and why it has suddenly been dropped in the new DVD release .We thought it may have something to do with upsetting the church.Maby there was complaints about it so its now been cut out.But in all this is a fine comedy dealing with the Brits Abroad, when in the 70s this was a great adventure for any Brit,as it was expensive then. The film also deals with all the holiday nightmares, the ones that ruin your holiday, such as drilling,no water, windows that don't open etc.But this hotel had everything wrong with it,for a start it was only half finished. So i recommend if your feeling in low spirits, watch a carry on film,as their bound to cheer you up.
