Asif Khan (asifahsankhan) When a film gets called "the best Alfred Hitchcock film that Alfred Hitchcock never made" in its trailer, it has a lot to live up to. And– watching the trailer– it's clear that Catfish definitely has the potential to be one darkly entertaining documentary.Just because a film doesn't feature buckets of blood doesn't mean it's not tense, or frightening, or that people aren't being gutted. Just because the trailers trade on the trappings of the thriller genre doesn't mean that Catfish is any less thrilling or tension- filled (almost unbearably so in some moments) to sit through. And lemme tell ya: it's not "FAKE1!!!!!1″, and it's not a Mock-monetary. Catfish is the real deal, and anyone that tells you otherwise clearly hasn't seen the film in its entirety yet. I'm warning you now: stay far away from those that would seek to spoil this film for you, and ignore the claims that it isn't real.Catfish — demonstrates that the internet and in this case Facebook allows users to not only share content, but to also steal content; to poach photos, videos, music and more and re-purpose it for their own use. The current explosion of content on the internet and social networks provides users with the ability to pluck content off the web and create an entire identity with stolen information.
joshyday98 Catfish: A documentary of online relationships, and finding your unknown partner. Is she real? In this day and age of social media it is hard to believe that anyone is out of reach or unknown with around half the population of all of Australia on Facebook, this is even more guaranteed. But what if the person you thought you knew all about actually turned out to be the unknown? This is the premise the 2008 documentary 'Catfish' (introduces the text). In a dramatic thriller with an interesting storyline likable star and an engaging story of self-discovery. The story follows a young and promising photographer and his online relationship with a little girl named Abby whom share paintings and photographs. Only adding her entire family on Facebook and getting into a relationship with her half-sister 100's of miles away. Starting to get attached to this Megan saying I love you on numerous occasions without actually knowing this person or seeing her face-to-face, and the adventure of going to Michigan to see Megan, and finding secrets that don't add up, finding secrets about Angela, Abby and Megan. This film started out as practice for young filmmakers Joost and Schulman, but as the story kept going it turned into a juicy story that at the time was unbelievable, and started their film careers. This film may seem raw in some places, but it is a credit to them as buddy filmmakers. One aspect I really enjoyed was the contrasting of the music between the beginning and the end of the movie, it's a light tune at the beginning and dark at the end Catfish was a great and wonderful thrill ride and it was a decent documentary with interesting plot lines and a great story.
robinski34 It doesn't feel right to give Catfish three stars, because it may be many things but 'Average' is not one of them, and yet going as far as 'Good' seems too far somehow, and 'Just OK' would undervalue a thoughtful piece of work. It is an intriguing film, and certainly holds the attention. Is it really a documentary? Are Ariel and Henry really filmmakers and Nev the aspiring photographer? In the end they are convincing enough, as is the whole premise, but the questions that Catfish asks are spoken as soft and subtle enquiries rather than loud demands for self examination, which perhaps they should be. The outcome is eyebrow-shifting, but not really a surprise and it seems like arch naivety for the filmmakers expect us to be shocked. Despite this Catfish is a touching piece of filmmaking and worthwhile sticking with to the end, even if it's only to find out where the name comes from, perhaps the most interesting aspect of all.
statuskuo "Catfish" is a really nice straight forward look into our new modern lives where we can create our own identities. Some, obviously, have more to run from than others. But NO ONE can claim they are innocent of complete and total truth. This movie left me with a very sad melancholy sense of how we identify ourselves. Without giving away much, I felt that there isn't a person in this world that wouldn't trade it for one they could control from scratch. To that, we see a lot of false hopes, broken dreams and reality that hits us too hard in the face. In essence, we feel more sympathy for the ones who would be deceptive over the ones that attempt to find deception since not one of us can deny we dream of others' lives. And sometimes, we believe it's better than our own. In this world...you can't blame the person for wanting a better life, if not even just imaginary.I really liked this movie. But I really don't like the people who made it. They seem to take joy in wanting to humiliate something they've already come to know. I do feel the redeeming value is when you do get the "real" story at the end. And it's heartbreaking and truthful. And you take all the supposed betrayal you feel and find that it is sometimes good that people will challenge your perception. The title doesn't give you an idea of what the movie is, but the explanation within the movie sure explains this idea.
