maylilyx The plot is so inflated with useless subplots and it's hard to understand what's going on. There's many things that could be cut out and the story wouldn't be any different. Not to mention the film itself is directed poorly, with flashing and confusing scenes. It's hard to know what's going on. And the idea of good versus evil had been done a million times. This isn't better than those others. And there's not a single likable character. The characters are actually quite despicable, for example, Anton, the main character, while inside a female body, entered Sveta's, a woman, shower without permission then when she orders him to leave he kisses her, all without her consent, and the movie portrays this sexual assault as romantic.
cccl350 I'll be honest, this movie is a mess. If it was made by Americans, people everywhere would be saying things like: "..Those f'n fat Americans and their shitty soul-less movies, they're greedy, they run out of ideas, etc...". However, since this is a foreign movie, it has been overrated. This movie tries hard to one-up American movie clichés. Its even based of a book, something that American film makers rip off frequently and then get blasted by people. This movie is like "Harry Potter"+"Constantine" on crack. The start of the movie looked interesting. It begins w/ an Asian legend about a horde of Mongols bum rushing a temple to retrieve an artifact that controls the world. They bypass a puzzle(maze) w/ brute force and take the artifact through outside of the box violence. I was told a very similar legend by a US Marshall instructor, except his legend involved Genghis Khan, a Buddhist temple, and a knot instead of a piece of chalk as the artifact. I'm guessing it was based of the Gordian Knot legend. Either way, it was a memorable war speech and the lesson of the legend is the same. The movie started w/ that irrelevant introduction, which barely had anything to do with the rest of the film. The movie just seemed to be a bunch of scenes thrown together as a pretext to show off a lot of fake looking CGI sequences. IE: birds turning into ninjas, a Mazda driving on the side of a building, flying yo-yos destroying Moscow, etc. After the opening act, we see a tormented detective driving a yellow garbage truck w/ his rookie partner, a homely looking woman who is also his lover. The garbage trucks in the movie are used by some covert Russian police agency that is... to be honest its never really explained what they are enforcing. I'm guessing they're some kind of guardians that keep the vampires in check or something. It seems that they have a truce w/ the vampire mafia, so that makes the protagonists role useless. It seems like an interesting idea, but the slow boring pace of the movie, absurd scenes, and the bad dialogue captions make it incomprehensible and hard to watch. The movie gets worse as it progresses. It builds up to this really weird final scene at a big sweet 16 birthday party where they battle it out. I'm not going to spoil the finale, but its super predictable. Any one reading this probably guessed how it ends. Its over 2 hours of incomprehensible scenes and lame cgi.
Chrysanthepop It's been a few weeks since I saw the eccentric and wacky 'Nochnoy Dozor' which was a complete thrillride. Having seen the sequel last night, 'Dnevnoy dozor' (a.k.a. 'Daywatch') is way more (positively) absurd, imaginative, extravagant and crazier than its prequel. It also makes up for many of the flaws that were in the first film (which was still a fun watch in spite of them) though I must add that it's better to watch 'Nochnoy Dozor' before watching this sequel as there are plenty of references that would otherwise be missed.'Nochnoy Dozor' and 'Dnevnoy dozor' have that comic book film feel to them and the makers load both films with plenty of energy, eccentricities, quirks and humour to keep the viewer engaged and allow them to feel involved in this bizarre world. The larger than life characters, the twists and turns, the mixture of fantasy and science fiction and revelations in the second film all fit together in an odd comical way.The visual effects, sound design, light effects, art direction and cinematography are first rate. The action sequences (and there are many) are a delight to watch. The performances are pretty decent. Viktor Verzhbitskiy, Zhanna Friske, Vladimir Menshov, Galina Tyunina, Valeriy Zolotukhin and Mariya Poroshina do a fine job. The suitably erratic score fits in smoothly. There're action, romance, carchases, bloodhunting, vampires, witches, time travelling, parallel worlds, a spiderchild, body swapping and many more weirdness that together make the fine ingredients for a delicious dish. What's not to like? 'Dnevnoy dozor' is a fantastic sequel, a roller-coaster ride from start to finish.
Samiam3 Ironically, there is something kind of impressive about the sheer sloppiness of Day Watch (sequel to Night Watch) I would never have thought it possible for a fictional movie to be this big a wreck and still allow me to follow the plot (but barely) Day Watch is ridiculously demanding of an audience members attention and it doesn't give us anything in return. There are no thrills/chills, scares or visual splendour, but there are a few laughs. Day Watch collapses under the weight of too much content and not enough legitimate story. Regardless of whether this is a noble adaptation of the novel, it cheats a movie goer out of a good time. I approached Day Watch hoping it would enrich the story of Night Watch, which had a cliffhanger ending. What I saw is a completely different ballgame. All the same faces are back but the performance quality is so dreadful that these feel like new people. The ending is the kind that makes the whole thing seem pointless, and by the whole thing I also mean the plot of Night Watch. How ever much you may have loved the first, is not gonna be enough to make Day Watch a worthy investment of time. This sloppy, overlong enterprise is in desperate need of a redo.
