ThreeGuysOneMovie Separated from their regiment after a brutal night of fighting German troops, a small band of soldiers from British Company Y find themselves lost on the battle ground surrounded by a dense fog. After in indeterminable amount of time wandering around the men stumble upon a German trench, occupied by several German soldiers who have apparently lost their sanity.Killing all but one of the German soldiers who they take prisoner, the men soon make a gruesome discovery while scouting out the remaining maze of trenches. The entire area is littered with countless German corpses all who have apparently killed each other. Through the interrogation of the German prisoner the men learn that they are not the only ones occupying the forward position as they suspected. With orders from their Captain to hold the position and wait for reinforcements, the small platoon must now stand against an unknown enemy more powerful than anything they have ever faced on the battle field. This film almost had potential but ultimately seemed to fall short. With a plot that had a few interesting moments it was otherwise quite predictable and made for an ending which wasn't as effective or surprising as was probably intended. The actors played their parts well considering the setting and circumstances which the movie revolved around. The two elements which stood out the most in this film were the sets and the cinematography, both helped in areas where this film fell short at times. Over all not a great movie but by no means was it the worst I have ever seen.
ajs-10 I watched this film purely on the write-up it got on the TV guide. It looked quite promising; a group of WWI soldiers are trapped behind enemy lines in a seemingly deserted German trench. They soon find that the bodies littering the place may not be quite as dead as they first thought. I was looking forward to a supernatural thriller/horror along similar lines to the 1984 film, The Keep. Sadly it wasn't so, it got too bogged down in the mud of the trenches in the middle, but there was a neat twist at the end. I won't do a summary this time; I think I've given you the idea of what it's about already. As far as performances go, well, for me the standout actor was the young Jamie Bell as Pfc. Charlie Shakespeare, he had some meaty dialogue and coped with it all very well. Andy Serkis did a good job as the psychotic Pvt. Thomas Quinn, as did Hugo Speer as Sgt. David Tate. Also worthy of note were Laurence Fox as Capt. Bramwell Jennings, Matthew Rhys as Cpl. Doc Fairweather, Hugh O'Conor as Anthony Bradford and an early role for Kris Marshall as Pvt. Barry Starinski. Oh, and finally, I thought the trench rats did a fine job too. This is one of those films that has the feel of something that was based on a stage play. It was all way too dramatic and emotions were way over the top (I felt). I guess it suffered from quite a low budget too because the effects and CGI were far from top notch. Although the gore factor is quite high, so definitely not one for the squeamish. I guess it's worth seeing for Jamie Bell's performance, but be prepared to come away slightly disappointed. Sadly, not recommended. My Score: 4.6/10 IMDb Score: 5.9/10 (5,436 votes when this review was written).Rotten Tomatoes Score: 29/100 (7 reviews counted when this review was written).
defhead359 As a film for serious film watchers, the 5.9 score on IMDb does not do it justice. This undeserved low rating just shows me how many people should have chosen Jennifer's Body rather than Deathwatch when searching through the Horror section of their local or online movie rental store. WWI was characterized as a necessary war with meaningless casualties- countless bodies, muddy trenches, rats and insects everywhere- and this movie portrays these details to perfection. The only detail this film does not and cannot transfer over from the disasters of battle is the smell, yet the viewer can almost smell the rotting odors for the characters in the story. I judge a film overall by its cinematography, characters, setting, plot, and especially underlying themes. And this film's underlying themes are impeccably deep. So anyone who did not enjoy this film, or forgot it the moment the credits rolled, should stick to Hollywood and prime-time TV.Stranded in a deserted German purgatorial trench, a British squad is ordered to hold the area until reinforcements arrive. Upon finding the trench the soldiers find three Nazis, kill two and hold the remaining one soldiers captive. Every soldier is different in some way: one, a natural leader; the leader, a by-the-book soldier; another, a killer; a religious devout, a few normal soldiers, and finally a 16 year-old brown-nosed idealist. All are put to the test defending the trench, dealing with the POW Nazi, taking the orders of the capt, and maintaining their poise in a dismal situation. By the end of the film, the audience finds out how almost no soldier in war can sustain their moral integrity for long. Even the religious devout loses faith by the end. The film shows how most soldiers are committing to evil the moment they sign up for the military; how warfare is still a means of murder, though it may be for the patriotic cause of one's country; and how when under duress one must maintain their own path of morality and value to salvation, whether or not they survive or die.
miss_deth_addict I've seen many bad movies but that one was way worst than getting a tooth plucked out... It was poorly made in so many ways in despise of the trenches being realistic and really well done the realization was bleh and the directing was inexistent I hope. The movie was slow paced, seemed to last for 10 hours and overall uninteresting, most of the ''horror'' scenes seemed like cheap rip offs from some other big horror movies (the barb wire scene (did someone see Silent hill once too many time?))... I had such high expectations for that one and I was deceived on all of them... bad bad bad movie. Please don't tell me I didn't get it I understood the movie and what it was about, the idea was great hence I wanted to see it so bad but the movie wasn't good it could have been a great movie but it is not!
