poe426 DEVILMAN makes the leap from anime to live-action well enough, if you ask me. In fact, it's one of the better anime-based live-action features. The anime happens to be one of my favorites. (My own DEVILGOD, who'll be appearing in a future issue of my black and white comic CAPE FEAR COMICS, was inspired by none other than Go Nagai's DEVILMAN.) (CAPE FEAR COMICS can be found at comiXpress.com, for those interested in seeing someone put his money where his mouth is.) Like the creatures in Clive Barker's NIGHTBREED, Go Nagai's DEVILMAN dwells just this side of the next world. It's a fascinating place to be, if you ask me.
Claudio Carvalho The weak teenager Akira Fudô (Hisato Izaki) has been protected by his best friend Ryô Asuka (Yûsuke Izaki) since they were children. When Akira's parents die in an accident, the family Makimura brings him to live with them, and Akira falls in love for the gorgeous Miki Makimura (Ayana Sakai). When the father of Ryô accidentally opens a gate to hell in Antarctica, demons are released, merging with humans to survive. Akira hosts Aman and becomes Devilman but keeping his humanity while Ryô hosts Satan. The hysteria and panic replaces reason and mankind initiates a war against the demons, but destroying also themselves.I have never read any comic book of "Devilman", therefore I am not familiarized with this character of manga. But this movie shows a promising idea wasted in a messy but also entertaining screenplay. This apocalyptical story shows Akira and Ryô as best friends, but never explains the motive of the evilness of Ryô. Further, it seems that there are "good demons" and evil ones, and Akira is the last hope of the human race, but the story does not develop well the motives of the two friends. Anyway this movie is underrated in IMDb with 3.8 and I liked it in the end. My vote is six.Title (Brazil): "Devilman"
thundertyrant Thank god the finished the story I had been waiting 10 years to see, and they pulled no punches! This isn't a fairy tale, or a farce, this is hardcore, non relenting story and action combined with a lesson on how imbecilic human nature can be. Some of the fights were confusing, and it did look like TV production, but all that is overlooked simply because it does not matter. This is a very good adaptation, and it wasn't a complete retelling of the story. There were twists and turns, and not the ending you would expect... See this movie, it's worth whatever you spend on it. I would have to say it stands next to Crying Freeman as one of the best Manga to Movie adaptations currently available.
nat43 I bought the movie without knowing anything but the anime movies. Before I watched it I checked the ratings here in the IMDb, and started to panic after reading some very negative comments and saw the 3.8 rating. I really thought about returning the movie before breaking the seal of the DVD. but I risked my money 25euro, and watched it. And look at that, it is not bad, no it is pretty good. OK the Japanese movie makers somehow still don't get it and use the wrong camera and film equipment, which turns the movie in TV production optics, but beside this Japanese brain problem, the movie is much better then 95% of all US Movies. There are no real big logic mistakes like in US movies. You can see that the fights were reduced radically in terms of length compared to the anime, which sure was a money problem, to expensive effects. the cg graphics are totally up to date, I saw much worse in spiderman the movie, or blade 2, for example. The story changed a lot, but this is not making the movie bad, and if you read the booklet you know that go nagai does this retelling with changing elements of his story already for years. I personally think that this version of devilman is the best. I like it more than the the 2 anime movies released here. If I just focus an violence and fight scenes, than the anime is better, but story and co. is much better in this movie. I don't know the original comics(mangas), but I know this movie is great, and you won't find a US production being so hard, showing the worst side of humans. Somebody complained about the actors, I can only say that there are sure better ones but they are actors and they do their job not so bad. For me the worst is the picture quality, produced by the cameras and film used in this movie. It looks like a cheap TV drama, until the cg graphics come and rule. That is all.
