gadawag Pointless, boring and plainly a waste of time. As the other reviewer said, I watch movies to be entertained from start to finish and not to end up with a headache trying to figure out what was going on. Jake's acting was undeniably superb but that did not help me to appreciate the whole movie perse.
Pjtaylor-96-138044 This enigmatic and ominous art-house thriller is nothing short of an experience. 'Enemy (2013)' is an incredibly nuanced and involving mystery that requires work to unravel but rewards your attention (and analysis) with a multitude of meanings and a plethora possible interpretations each as valid as the last, building to become quite the conundrum of a film considering it can be two (almost) entirely different events depending on whether or not you've seen it before and whether or not you're willing to take things on more than just their face value - which, incidentally, also work wonderfully well even without the, arguably, intended 'double meaning' applied. Regardless of your interpretation, the amount of allegory and intrigue is astonishing and the fact that it gets so under your skin is nothing short of admirable, as is its ability to stay there and make you contemplate it for literal days on end. The in-the-moment vibe of the piece is top-notch, too, so that, even if you don't understand everything (or, perhaps, anything), you'll feel every single strangely disturbing yet staggeringly beautiful moment. 8/10
rzajac Ultimately, it worked for me.Now, I know that sounds like "damning with faint praise." But I loved it because it was artfully made and dances on the event horizon of "takeaway opacity", that you are severely challenged to understand its ultimate meaning. I love that. I love that it was willing to do that, to exert itself to create a presentation to convey that puzzle.Of course, I have ideas of what it's about, but the whole thing rests comfortably on my back burner... where it rightfully belongs. If that bothers you--sounds like it's not yr cup o' tea--then pass it up. But I aver it truly was a masterful exercise in an odd sort of storytelling. It worked for me.
MichaelMRamey If I could, I'd give this a 5.5 because that more accurately represents my take on this film. I wanted to love it really badly because not only am I a Jake Gyllenhaal fan, but the film take place in my home of both Toronto and Mississauga. I'll admit I was on the edge of my seat and intrigued just waiting to find out how in the hell the writer was going to explain how this was possible, but to my disappointment there is no payoff. The ending is symbolic and despite many theories, there really is no concrete reason for that spider ending. This whole film felt like a fever dream, but it was different so I'll give it that.
