kami-c I saw this movie for the first time about 10 years ago. This is an Indie film of the vigilante/exploitation variety. If you have seen the first Freeway film (which is a re-imagining of, "Little Red Riding Hood") than you won't be disappointed by this film's re-imagining of the children's fairy tale, "Hansel and Gretel". I don't want to give too many details about this film in the review because I strongly suggest that you view it yourself first. If you cannot purchase the DVD, I have seen scenes from the movie on youtube.com (however the quality is not as good). This movie is unforgettable and has plenty of shocking scenes (including one disturbing sequence involving actor, Vincent Gallo that is either laugh out loud hilarious or completely disgusting depending on your taste). There also several references to Bulimia,Lesbianism,Necrophilia, Cannibalism, and prostitution. So if you find any of these things disturbing than this film is not for you. On the other hand, if you enjoy movies that push the envelope, than you are in for a treat. Enjoy!
The_Void First of all, I have to say that this really isn't a sequel to 1996's Freeway; it features the same director and the plot is again loosely based on a fairy tale; but the similarities end there and I can only imagine the film has 'Freeway 2' in it's title so they didn't have to release it as just 'Confessions of a Trickbaby' (which is unlikely to appeal to anyone). It would appear that the film's only intention is to be as depraved and vulgar as possible. I actually have no problem with this in theory; but unfortunately the film itself is not interesting enough to justify it. The film begins with a sequel that shows young hell raising bulimia-sufferer Crystal (better known as 'White Girl') given twenty five years for a series of minor crimes. She is sent to a women's prison, while her lawyer tries to get her off. While inside, she meets Cyclona; a Mexican murderess; and after a bunch of scenes showing girls being sick and stuff, the pair eventually escapes and goes on the run while trying to make it to Mexico. The film is supposedly a variant on the classic fairy tale 'Hansel and Gretel' but I don't know why this was included in the film. There are a couple of nods to it; but mostly they're very lame (not to mention loose) and the film would have been better off just forgetting about this part of the plot. Natasha Lyonne takes the lead role and actually does a fairly good job. Her character made me roll my eyes a few times; but she is at least memorable. She gets support from María Celedonio, who is good enough; while David Alan Grier steals the show as the amusing offbeat lawyer. The film tries its best to be cool throughout; but unfortunately never really achieves it as it tries too hard. I was really starting to get bored as the ending loomed in sight; the first hour or so is mindlessly entertaining, but then the film tries to get a bit clever and I didn't care for it. On the face of it, this sounds like a film that will appeal to fans of wayward cinema; but it's just not very well done and I'd recommend French film Criminal Lovers instead if you want a contemporary thriller based on Hansel and Gretel.
Falconeer Being a fan of the first "Freeway" with Reese Witherspoon, I wanted to check this out. Upon first viewing, I just wasn't sure. 'Trickbaby' is not a pretty film, and it took a while to adapt, but on second viewing, after the shock wore off, I could thoroughly enjoy "Confessions of A Trickbaby." Lyonne is f_ck%ng hilarious here, her performance is fearless; she is not afraid to be seen vomiting, or shoving food into her mouth, or to be just totally 'busted' on camera. This is the first thing I have seen her in and I am an instant fan. What a performance! Though the film is sleazy and ugly at times, I found myself sympathizing with Lyonnes character, 'White Girl/Crystal'. Her life has obviously been rough, and it has made her a tough, angry girl. She is thrown into prison, where she meets 'Cyclona', another girl whose life has been a rough road. A victim of all kinds of sick abuse, she is an insane serial killer who has visions of one 'Sister Gomez', Gallo's character, who she believes is the answer to all her problems. When the girls find 'Sister Gomez' they discover that this is not the case, in one of the most twisted and perverse endings i have seen in cinema. Technically, this is not as professionally-made as "Freeway", perhaps because it didn't have the financial backing of Oliver Stone. It is hard to imagine, but this cranks up the sleaze level compared to Freeway, which was a fairly twisted film. 'Trickbaby' is a lot darker than that first film, and deals with some more uncomfortable themes, and it is clearly not for all tastes. This is the kind of film that seems to get better after every viewing. I imagine that some day, this might become one of my favorites. I recommend "Confessions" to fans of "bad girl" cinema, and to those who are just tired of all the mainstream garbage coming out of Hollywood these days.
Michele Koh I watched in while I was with my friend in Indonesia, and he had bought the pirate DVD. I was anticipating a soft porn movie or a chick flick with the Hollywood code of political correctness. The ending was a real shocker, something that I could never imagine would appear so horrifically and comically in movies. But it had heart to it. The positive message for mature audiences in that: criminals are not born, and small girls are not commercial goods. Sublime example of a fearless production team. Watch it if you enjoy fairy tales, like "The Company of Wolfs' If you are a Tarantino fan, then you might really get the essential ideas and concepts within the bloody murders and perversions.
