Frank White A light pleasant comedy with great 80s fashion and music. Great one liners and a nice ending. It has everything, to comedy to being serious. Joyce Hyser should of gotten more lead roles, cause she is a wonderful actress, and very beautiful esp. in the scene were she is wearing the bikini by the pool. I seen the other movies she stared in, and with her talent, Joyce is the one that lights the scene. Also, interesting to see Joyce who is so pretty be able to pull off being a guy. Buddy (her younger brother) is a riot and Terry meets lots of interesting classmates at her new school. William Zabka (Karate Kid, Back to School) plays the standard jock bully. Brings back memories of my days in high school when we didn't have to worry about going through gun detectors to go to school. This was such a classic 80's movie. It is a must see!
witster18 First off, Billy Jayne's character of "Buddy" steals the show here. Right there with Farmer Ted(Sixteen Candles),Tim Matheson(Up the Creek) Dave Marshak(Ski School), and Sean William Scott's "Stifler"(American Pie) or "Doug Glatt"(GOON) as one of/if-not-the best goofball characters from the VHS era. He is hilarious!"Just One of the Guys" is sorely under-rated. When more modern films like "Take Me Home Tonight" are ranked about the same - it really, truly is a travesty.Joyce Hyser's performance is far from perfect, but I still think she was a good casting decision. She's not quite believable enough as a guy to really put this film over the top. In her 'female' clothes she is fantastic - she's more charming and effective here when she's playing 'the real' Terri. The film has it's heart in the right place. Not only is each starring role well-developed and well-cast, there are other co-stars that well-represent just about every stereotype that you would find in High School during the 80's.Everything works. From the music, to the writing, to the finale', "Just One of the Guys" is one of the most over-looked comedies of it's generation, and certainly worth a look if you haven't seen it. Some of the acting is less than perfect, but it's light-hearted approach to every subject, and many laugh-out-loud moments make it a real winner.Highly Recommended. You might like this if you liked: Three O'clock High(about even with this), She's All That(not as good), or Fraternity Vacation(a notch below).73/100
tbyrne4 I saw this when it first came out and thought it was a laugh riot (I wasn't even a teenager yet) and just re-watched it again after many years. The screenplay is awesome. It's very funny. The movie's not nearly as funny as I remember. The acting is certainly a lot stiffer than I remember. But not bad. Basic premise is that Terri, a gorgeous but brainy senior is convinced her teachers aren't taking her seriously because she's a girl. While her parents are away she dresses up like a boy ("Terry") and spends two weeks at a nearby school to prove her point. It's mostly comedy of errors type stuff (nothing too raunchy) involving her sex-crazed younger brother, a hot-to-trot girl who falls for "Terry", and her superficial boyfriend who's oblivious to the fact that she's dressing up like a boy. She also meets a guy at the new school (Clayton Rohner) who she kind of takes under her wing and helps him get a prom date. Oh yeah, she also crosses paths with William "Karate Kid" Zabka as an iron pumping bully. What really surprised me about the film was how easily I was able to accept the Terri character as a boy. And yet, she and the Clayton Rohner character have a chemistry that's undeniable and quite touching. You can see her character slowly falling for him. It almost makes you wish that the director had focused less on the younger brother's hijinks and more on the relationship between Terri and Rohner. Quite a good movie.
mrscallop The William Zabka bully trilogy is composed of three of the best 80's movies to come out of the… uh… 80's. Along with The Karate Kid and Back to School, Just One of the Guys benefits from having Billy Zabka as the bad guy. Terry Griffin (Hyser) writes a paper that she thinks is destined to make her an intern at the local newspaper but is turned down because of her gender. No problem, she just dresses like Ralph Macchio and attends the rival school where she'll submit her paper to. There, she encounters our favorite 80's bully, an over-sexual girl admirer, and falls for her best pal Rick (Rohner) who has no clue he is actually a she. Like I said, Zabka makes bullying look easy and fun but who takes the cake in this movie? Not Joyce Hyser, not Clayton Rohner, nor even Zabka but Billy Jane/Jacoby who plays Terry's little sex-crazed brother Buddy. The whole movie sees him wanting to get laid or thinking about anything and everything sexual. His room is plastered with pictures of naked women and he'll hit on anything with boobs. Sounds a bit much but the way he does it is masterful. He carries this mischievous grin throughout that makes it seem like he's aware of what and why he's doing it. He definitely steals the movie from the rest and he's a joy to watch. Again, another great 80's actor that disappeared with a new generation that left him behind.
