Jan van Steenbergen (ijzeren_jan) Krish, a biologist from National Geographic, is sent out to investigate the case of a killer tiger haunting the Indian jungle. On his way, he joins a group of youngsters who are out for adventure and some hunting. Deep in the jungle, they meet the mysterious Kali, who warns them to go back. Of course, they refuse, and the more they get lost, the more the plot thickens. For a horror flick from Bollywood, Kaal is not a bad movie at all. It is, in any case, way beyond the monsters-with-faces-like-pizzas kind of horror that used to dominate Bollywood in the 1980s and 1990s, and unlike horror flicks of the "who's next?" type, it keeps you focused from the beginning till the end, and at times really manages to surprise. Sure, there are things we always know in advance: if there are a few better known actors and a few unknown, we all know who is going to be eaten first. But that's a minor thing. Before watching Kaal, all I knew was that it was some sort of Indian "Jaws" with a tiger instead of a shark. And I am grateful for that, because otherwise the appearance of Kali, a mysterious inhabitant of the jungle, might have evoked the wrong kind of expectations. I for one found myself utterly surprised when he turned out to be the "bhoot", the ghost he had been telling about, himself. A fascinating character! What I like best about him is the fact that he never hurts anybody, on the contrary, he keeps warning everybody. Nobody dies because of Kali or a tiger. All those who die, die merely because of their own stupidity. They should have listened to Kali. The film has another huge asset: the excellent background score by the duo Salim-Sulaiman. That said, there are a few decisive minuses as well. First of all, the movie begins with a completely idiotic video clip featuring Shahrukh Khan in a wet shirt, which has nothing in common with the movie whatsoever. They might as well have filled the same space with a commercial, or, for that matter, with a black screen. Another weak point are the characters. Ajay Devgan does an excellent job as Kali, but the script fails to work out any of the other characters. Even calling them flat or cardboard would be too much, because frankly, there's no character in them at all. Vivek Oberoi manages best, but John Abraham fails to impress and especially the women (Lara Dutta and Esha Deol) serve no other purpose than being pretty and constantly afraid. This poor characterisation has a major disadvantage: you can't identify with the characters and never really care if someone dies or not. But all in all, the exciting plot makes up for this weakness. It didn't stop me at all from enjoying "Kaal".
arsh7777777 I watched the promos. I didn't really pay much attention to the promos. The first screening and boom, so many videos on youtube. The one of SRK's item song really got me to go and watch the film. I sat through the first 20 - 30 minutes...bored. Then it picks up. The ending is very ironic. This movie is very hyping. My ratings for this movie are 1) Story - 9/10; 2) Direction - 7/10 (The Weaker point); 3) Performances - 8/10; 4) Character Development - 8/10; 5) Overall - 8/10. In my point of view, this movie is nice. If you're not such a big fan of thrillers, then this is not for you to watch because it is...well... it's a thriller.
homegnome1 The movie begins with a song and dance routine, a teasing close up on a set of lips pursed to convey a kiss! Then, just over the top of her head, you can see familiar eyes, what a tease! I'd recognize Shah Rukh Khan in the shadows anywhere! Ah, and he delivers a fantastic and energetic introduction. Here's a hint, turn your DVD player off now. You have just seen the only part worth watching. Save yourself a lot of time or press rewind and watch the dance again. If you continue, you will be aggravated at yourself for watching so much talent go to waste. There is barely a plot, the script is pathetic, and nothing, I mean nothing happens that you can't see coming 20 minutes beforehand. I gave the movie a "one" because I had to give some credit for the dance (which by itself rates a "ten"), and also because there was no option to give it a "zero". This is supposed to be a suspense filled thriller about mysterious deaths in the jungle. There is no suspense, no thrills, and you find yourself hoping that they all die just to get it over with.
Sherazade I liked this film, you have to watch it, understand it, and digest it before you judge it. The premise is quite old but nevertheless refreshing when told in this very Bollywood way. A bunch of friends set out for a summer adventure of a lifetime, and boy do they get it! At least the ones that survive that is. The stunning stellar cast of Vivek Oberoi, John Abraham, Lara Dutta, Esha Deol and Ajay Devgan set your eyes into hyperactive motion as the plot begins to unravel. Esha and John are a married couple who work for National Geographic and are sent to India's wildlife reservation to conduct an investigation into stories of man-eating tigers. Along the way, they bump into a pack of college kids who include Oberoi and Dutta who also are a couple. I also need to point out the opening song and dance number which shows off a cameo by the King Khan himself, Shah Rukh (he produced the film) burning up the screen with a hot new look and gyrating his hips alongside MAK to the sexy urban number entitled 'Kaal' (the song is hot, that's all you need to know at this point) a total must see! No other songs occur during the film, as it is a serious one. But make sure you catch 'Tauba, Tauba' and 'Naza Naza' with a sizzling performance by the two couples after the film. Sexy Yaar!
