francesmhill Maybe it is a cultural thing, I'm from New York originally and now live in LA, but this is an absolute shocker of a movie. I assumed it was a first time director who'd raided his daddies piggy bank, but it seems he's made movies before! (I still stick with the piggy bank view though, because who else would give this guy money). I think I'm probably ranting more than usual because of the overall sexist view the film takes, which in this day and age should just not be a thing. I shouldn't be surprised coming from a TV movie, but the screenplay was nowhere near good enough to shoot from. I don't think they were trying to be outdated and sexist, but those feelings are just there in plain sight. I found this when I was travelling with a movie in Europe and thought it would be a nice gentle movie to fall asleep to, but I ended up writing my first ever review on IMDB just for it! If you care about more modern ways of viewing women, and quite frankly good movies, avoid this at all costs. I feel sorry for some of the cast though, they had a tough time with that screenplay and I don't blame them at all!
rosepetersfilm I think I missed the joke about what this film is supposed to be. I gave it two stars instead of one just in case it is some satirical comment that I missed... But I somehow doubt it. The writing is sloppy and not as witty as I think the writer thinks it is, it's not badly put together, but the direction is worthy of a terrible TV movie, just get it done and lets get to the bar, kind of approach. It's also a terrible representation of women. I watched it because I was trying to give the director another chance after watching an appalling movie by him and my Catholic guilt made me try and give him another go. I've learnt my lesson... No more second chances.
elizevn A feel good intercontinental love story, encompassed by undeniable humor, indifference, understanding and some good old nostalgia. Subtly taking on everything you would expect to see in the ingredients for a perfect love story: wholesome, healthy and fulfilling.Leading Lady left me smiling and believing that love will always prevail, be it in a big city or on a small farm forgotten by time, held together by hope. If you do anything this weekend - make sure it includes Leading Lady and some popcorn!A definite 10/10
Gavin Rose This turned out to be a laugh out loud move, with a few sad moments and beautiful South African winter scenery.Classic filmmaking, no camera man with Parkinson's disease.A real slice of life movie. Tannie Magdaleen Willemse is the aunt we all need to have, she is a typical Boer wife who makes a plan. Her son Kobus Willemse is a "genuine" guy, although in reality young Boer men have impeccable manners. Jodi Rutherford is a finds herself when she meets the Willemse family and the colourful characters.Brümilda van Rensburg (Magdaleen Willemse) and Bok van Blerk (Kobus Willemse) are true hidden talents the the rest of the world are missing out on. I really love the fact that the main characters can convey a message to each other, and the audience, with just a look or a nod, its these little nuances that make a good move.Grab your popcorn and take a look at a slice of real life, after this movie you will feel better than if you spent the day at a spa.
