alexharbinson767 I see this film as an interesting spin on the 'best friends for life' direction. Hewlett and Miller have good on-screen interaction and their characters really bounce well off each other. I agree the plot could be seen as very flat, it does seem like it takes a while to move from one point to another but strangely it suits this amble through the laid back plot. Don't expect to understand what's happening, it's not a film about understanding vast complexities, such as the aforementioned Cube or Primer, but stands as a general story of confusion and friendship. Logical details are overlooked most of the time, which can be frustrating when you want to understand aspects of the plot more, but these things don't really need explanation in the grand scheme of the film. It would, however, have been better to see more focused points of conflict to give the viewer a greater idea of where the plot is headed, the ambiguity of the direction it takes did tire after a short time.As a fan of other films Hewlett has been in, I appreciate his style of acting in Nothing, this seemed to be a perfectly feasible character for him to be, though I do still believe the nihilist Hewlett is most entertaining. I can't recall having seen Miller in anything else, however I will be looking out for his name in features to come.Worth a watch, nothing mega special but a fun experience.
elshikh4 As a fantasy, it's great. Apart from an original imaginative world, it gives a new supernatural power : The oblivion (forget the thing, anything, and in no time it'll disappear forever), inviting us to forget what we hate. But what if you hated everything and everyone, including yourself ?! Artistically it's fine too. The direction, the music, the cinematography, the acting, the set and oh yes, the CGI, all of that looked terrific. The script has many good lines and situations. It creates so fresh atmosphere, while leading the pace in such a thrilling way. And no doubt it is one unpredictable movie where you're dared to know what is going to happen later. So, where is the problem? I know. It's in that very script. Deeply in the feeling that moves it.Let's see. At first you may think that it's about facing a mega-cruel world, with a real horrific intro by the way. Then, after a while, you may think that it's about hatred, and how forgetting, wise one, can solve a lot, making the peace with one's self on one hand, and one's self with the world on the other hand. But it isn't about this or that. It is simply about friendship. Originally it doesn't focus on the outward world, since the goal is deep down inside the human. It's about the comprehension of the importance of not forgetting the friend, the love. The movie tries to assure that changed yourself or not, in your world or out of it, at any cost you have to have a friend, with arguments and problems, but not hate. Because when you don't have one, then you have nothing. Yet, that freaky ending degrades in a way the cuteness of the mix, saying that moral shockingly !I felt disappointed eventually, simply due to the tragic sense of it; whereas the 2 leads knew the truth about the greatness of "being together" while "admitting the love", and "being honest" however after totally destroying everything and everyone including themselves. So it confirms the constructive power of love, yet adversely; by confirming the devastative power of hate. Yes, we're accustomed to have these sweet meanings about love sweetly from Hollywood, and now this is the nightmarish way for it. But in fact what really disappoints is that while the movie cautions about hatred, it hated its 2 character's dumbness so powerfully !It's one of the best movies ever made about friendship. It mixes pretty well delightful infancy with black comedy, fantasy with psychoanalysis. You just have to know well what it talks about to understand and enjoy it. And be ready for its much hatred to its leads who hated, especially each other, much !
siderite There isn't much to say,but at least there's something :) The whole movie is based on two people, old friends from school, where they were ostracized for being too geeky, living together in a sh*thole house, being ostracized by everybody for being too geeky. Well, in an American movie, we would notice a lot of good qualities about these two people, then a goal would be defined as end game, a villain would be presented and in the end the good qualities would make the heroes reach their goal and defeat the villain. In a Canadian movie, Nothing happens!OK, enough with the jokes, the idea behind the film is friendship, but refined (refinery style) until there is nothing else there. And this movie does take the expression to ridiculous extremes. Also, everything is very loud. The characters shout all the time, either in joy or anger, making everything something to make an effort to watch. The characters themselves aren't the nicest people on the planet. They are clueless, though, and you can barely hold against them the fact that they are sometimes mean jerks to each other. They are like grown up children. But you do feel for them, because they are not the Dumb and Dumber style of idiots, just normal people with no social skills whatsoever.I actually saw the movie because David Hewlett was in it, but it was disappointing. A lot of film for a very simple idea, however twisted and beautifully presented. A short movie would have covered it better, I think. The only movie I can compare this with is Napoleon Dynamite, also highly regarded by some, and a movie that bored me to death and couldn't watch till the end. Bottom line: watch it if you have Nothing better to do :)
Gavin Stewart I thought this was an awesome movie. The theme song is sweet! :) Anyway, the only thing that somewhat bothered me was in the beginning, when everything should have been normal. It was very weird and unrealistic. The big cable company is mainly what I'm talking about. Apart from that, the movie was very creative. I think that all the acting was well done, the actors acted out their characters' personalities perfectly. Everything fit together well. It really is a shame that their isn't a soundtrack. That would have been great! Because this is a Canadian film, and because it is one of my favorites, I give this movie a 10 out of 10!
