juliette-20138 After beginning this film, excited that it was listed on multiple websites as one of the best "psychological thrillers", I was a bit surprised to find that a good portion of the plot revolved around a love relationship. However, after analyzing every scene, I came to appreciate not only what this relationship did for the movie, but also the incredible detail that went into the film. Every aspect of this film, from lighting to sound, worked incredibly well to create moods depending on the scene. The editing of close ups combined with low-key lighting and dramatic music allowed for many of the scenes closer to the end of the movie to have a jarring effect. Furthermore, I soon found that the relationship was about much more than love. Hitchcock brought up questions of trust, of manipulation, and of greed with the complications that arise between Alicia and Devlin. The relationship in this film between Alicia and Devlin also illustrates the breaking up of the Hays Code during this period, as there were insanely long (compared to previous) kissing scenes and scenes suggesting romance. Although this movie was not as intense and mind-blowing as I expected, the fantastic editing, directing, and cinematography made me really enjoy the film and the questions it raises.
m-krajeski For a movie that takes place after WWII, with Nazi's and spies, this movie is mostly psychological. There isn't action, nor is there fast paced suspense like any James Bond or Taken film. However there is a surplus of dialogue between Sebastian, Huberman, and Devlin. This take on the genre allows plenty of character development to blossom between the characters, focusing on their intentions, moods, and the overall tone of the movie. Maybe not one of Hitchcock's finest works, but it gets the job done in a well written plot, fairly likable characters and justifiable ending.
chaswe-28402 Rains, Grant and Bergman are victims in this story, especially Rains. You have to feel sorry for Rains. I know he is a Nazi, but he seems an unusually well-mannered, agreeable, charming British-type Nazi, and he is very badly treated, not only by Bergman, but also by his evil, dominating Hitchcock-type, mother. She is also a victim, of course, since her son ends by getting done in by the other Nazis. Perhaps she is also doomed. The only one who is not a victim is Calhern. You can tell that by the way he comfortably stretches out his legs, munching his goodies, as he gives his cynical instructions to tortured Cary Grant. He makes casual use of the lot of them.Reading the negative reviews for this subtle exercise in manipulative psychology is positively hilarious. No guns ? No shoot-outs ? No devilish gadgets ? Just talk ? These complaints indicate just how far we've entered into the mindless robotic age. Thought is abolished, in favour of mechanism. The triumph of the machines is not far off. Sigmund Freud has had it. I was only going to give this film 8 stars, but I'll have to add one, to counter the cretins. Very well-acted and skilfully directed throughout.
elvircorhodzic Compound excellent director, screenwriter and great cast resulted in a superb film. NOTORIOUS is a great, exciting and tense melodrama. Hitch has combined what is expected of him for years. Exquisite romantic story and very intelligent thriller that follows her.The elements in the film do not differ much from previous works. In other words, they are great. Thematically, the film is remarkable. Alcoholism and uranium in trace. Nazi gang in exile and emotionally damaged girlfriend as an American spy. The emotional drama of the main character is likely to overcome everything else. I would not say that emotion is based on courage, morality or cynicism. Although these elements are exaggerated, I think they are a danger, doubt and love pain incomparably stronger for romance in this film. The situations in the film are a bit old-fashioned and it definitely could have been tighter, but on the other hand I wonder how much it would damage made emotions and romance. It's all about the kiss. Love scenes are candid and disturbing. Rare are such a sensitive emotional scenes. The main actress leads the expression of the rich and real emotions.Ingrid Bergman as Alicia Huberman is the heart of this film. It's all about her character. It is the most important link and did a great job. Cary Grant as T.R. Devlin is amazingly strong. Type detective who falls in love. Expected are his feelings prevailed profession, but firmness and strength of character is maintained to the very end. Claude Rains as Alexander Sebastian is a "big shot", which has engaged in something that is not up. Rains is the right choice. His character does not give cruel leadership than jealousy, suspicion and fear. This movie is a wonderful experience, great genre blend, elegant style and excellent visual expression left a deep mark.
