owlbwise When I watched the movie, I didn't realize it was based on reality. Sure, nobody knows the actual events or conversations that took place, but it should be a wake up call. Even if traveling and exploring as a couple, people should converse with other passengers so they will immediately be missed. Sure the movie was boring in places, but it was based on reality, not for excitement. It is truly sad this couple was left behind and never rescued.
vengeance20 I really can't understand how films like this are so well received & praised! I mean, there was little to no action in it. 3/4 of the film was just the couple bobbing up & down in the sea bitching at one another & finally the ending just came & that was it!The film premise is basic & short. A couple get forgotten about while scuba diving out at sea, they're trapped & far away from land & are in a sink or swim situation (literally). And that's it. There is some action in it, but 'very' little & that's of sharks swimming about around the couple. It's simply typical, as me hating this film in the eyes of someone else who watched & liked this bore of a film, would probably criticise me for being all action fan boy who only cares about blood, explosions & profanity! Then judging me because this film doesn't use clichés & somehow is self explanatory, very similar to that of The Blair Witch Project which like this film was an outright bore! Well, yeah, I mean it's a film & a film 'has' to be entertaining! Whats the point otherwise if there's f**k all action in a film, that it can be called so much as good or remotely entertaining! It's funny because the tagline for this film is "Jaws meets Blair Witch" which I find to be quite funny in a way because that's what this film is like, well 3/4 of the film is Blair Witch & only 1/4 is Jaws! It has the b!tchy, annoying, boring, crappy, short arse-ness which is that of The Blair Witch Project & only has a very minuscule bit of action which is that of Jaws! If it had the action of Jaws this film would've been better & far more enjoyable, yet it just had to be over used on the boring Blair Witch formula! It really sucked! It was more like Blair Witch meets Jaws minus the action sequences! It's funny really, how people who liked this crappy film go on about how it's like being in a real situation & that it's a the true fear that makes it great when hilariously enough, we're behind a screen & the novelty of that crap is gone within seconds since it came in. You need more than just fear, especially when it's a film & people want entertainment! In other words people who are faint hearted & actually get scared 'really' easily would like this, but I myself wasn't scared & we as humans can't truly feel scared unless we're actually in that situation! It's near enough impossible, so the novelty is worn quickly & the film just drags on with no action in it! They had to take the non-cliché route & balls up a film which could've had potential! Even for a short film, it felt long & boring! Not to mention as annoying as The Blair Witch Project which sucked hard!I overall hated this film! It is really bad! Don't watch! 1/10
userwithnoname People were affected very differently by this movie. I first watched this more than a decade ago and didn't think much of it then. It had a shaky camera, true story, Blair Witch-vibe which was very popular at the time. I knew it was going for realism, but it never went beyond that. Now my life is different. I have a job and take regular vacations and adventure activities. Watching it again, i realised this was one terrifying and intense movie. Much of the horror comes from the straight forward, simplistic realism. No story is being told here, unlike its sequel Adrift (which i also like btw....just me, i have a thing for watery movies). There is no moral, no cinematography. Just straight forward representation of events. They call this a psychological horror, and it really is. The horror comes from your personal experience of the world and how much you can relate. Even if you don't dive, we all have experienced when things go wrong, when a fun activity takes a horrible turn, when the simplest becomes complicated, when the most unlikely takes place and only a second to unfold. Nothing was inherently scary in this movie. They were only stranded for a few hours, and even when the film finishes, it was only one night (humans can go for days without food or water). The sharks weren't big. The one that bit Daniel was possibly smaller than him. This was no monster movie. However, their situation was serious, dire and hopeless from the beginning, because of the unique circumstance. They were virtually impossible to find and after 7 hours, i was surprised they didn't freak out at the hopelessness of the situation as i would have. The worse for me wasn't the shark bite or one night drifting in pitch black stormy oceans but instead the realisation that there was no hope and no respite.
connorbbalboa Saying this looks like home video is no false statement because this was actually filmed on one of those early digital cameras for homemade movies. I do think it is a cool look, but I cannot say that the rest of the movie is cool, except for one or two things. The story is a couple is going on a last-minute vacation for some relaxation and go scuba-diving on their first morning there. Unfortunately, their boat leaves them behind and they are left in the middle of the ocean with no land for miles and only an occasional boat or plane in sight. I myself have made comparisons to this and The Blair Witch Project like many others, mainly because of their styles of film-making, but here's the comparison that I made: the main characters in both movies get into trouble because they act like IDIOTS. I'm not kidding; the couple stays underwater longer than their given time, when they get stranded and do see a boat, they don't yell out for help and simply wave their arms (even though the husband has no problem yelling out in anger after being stranded for some time), and they pass up on a couple of opportunities to get help from a boat, simply because they don't think it's their boat (although this happens very soon after they get lost). Even the tour guides are pretty irresponsible. They miscount their passengers simply because one passenger dives back in with someone who didn't dive yet, and they leave without doing a role call. They don't even notice at the end of the day that some of their scuba gear is missing. I know that people will tell me that this is based on real events so my complaints are unrealistic, but here's my response: write a better script that doesn't make its characters seem like idiots, because I don't care for movies centering around people who act as such. I even think the concept is good, but again: the idiotic behavior of the characters ruins it. P.S. If you're trying to recapture a bit of Jaws, Open Water, at least be more subtle about it (you'll know what I mean when you see it). P.P.S. The ending is chilling, though.
