jonnygjonson A cast and crew of relative newcomers; not a known actor in sight; shot in the (not so) glamorous locations of Birmingham and Stoke; and with a budget seemingly accumulated from the bottom of a wishing well, 'Pulp' sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. But if the directors (Adam Hamdy and Shaun Magher) wished for a fun, energetic movie that keeps you smiling and laughing throughout, then their wish was granted.'Pulp' is the story of Tony Leary (Jay Sutherland), the hapless comic-book publisher of Junk Comics, whose previous work has been described as the worst printed material since Mein Kampf. With bills he can't pay, and the UK comic convention approaching, he has one last roll of the die at turning his fortunes around. Somehow, he's drafted in by the police to help them uncover a drug gang, who are using a rival comic-book company to launder their money.If the plot sounds a bit bonkers, that's because it absolutely is. Unashamedly so. Throughout, the film revels in its own buffoonery, to varying degrees of success; prolonged heated exchanges between characters about movies such as 'Inception' and 'Star Wars' really work as moments of well-written pop-culture references, whereas some of the zany characters are so over-the-top and at odds with the rest of the tone, that they feel like they belong in another (perhaps animated) film entirely.The acting performances are all sound, despite the characters ranging from the believable to the downright ridiculous, and it's this lack of a consistent tone that's probably the films weakest point. You can never quite fully invest in the world, because you're not quite sure what that world is meant to be. Whilst Jay Sutherland does a great job at portraying Tony Leary's trials and tribulations in a three-dimensional way, some of the other characters - such as the bumbling geek side-kick, Keith (Simon Burbage), and the aggressive cop, Tyler (Neil Jennings) - may as well be cardboard cut-outs (perhaps not through any fault of the actors themselves may I add).Sometimes it all just works and sometimes it all falls a bit flat and frankly that's the film in a nutshell.That said, like Kevin Smith's 'Clerks', 'Pulp' has no pretences about what it's trying to do or say; it really is just an enjoyable, at times careless, movie which does exactly as it says on the tin.If you're willing to overlook the shortcomings, there really is a great little movie here, probably best viewed with a few friends after a night out.

Mystergeneral The title of this review is probably a little bit misleading. It isn't the worst comedy film, it's the worst film every made.I should have known by the trailer. It consisted of people in the foyer of the cinema giving their review on the film. This is usually a sign that the film is rubbish. After watching the film, i can only guess they were paid to read out fake reviews. There is no way it can be there opinion.what to say about the film? Unfunny, badly structured, nonsensical plot, a protagonist that you want to fail. You wonder what his motivation is to get out of bed and go on the journey.One plus is the actors are actually quite good. They did the best they could with the script.The script is so bad it will make you angry. It clearly has had no script doctoring at all. I would guess it was a first draft and they just went to the filming stage.I would love to give it a zero but IMDb wont allow me.Apparently, according to the trailer, i will be quoting this film all night.I will sign off now with a quote...right, i'm off for a sh*t

deathkoolaid I watched this film on xbox after I saw that it was the first film to be distributed straight to xbox live. I'm so glad I only rented it and did not buy. It was truly one of the worst films i have ever seen. I thought that because of this distribution deal the film may have had some value, I'm now guessing that xbox never watched it before they signed the deal. The story made no sense, the characters are so misplaced and I had no desire to want them to succeed. (A rocker, who's a geek, also a hard nut, oh and he's a lady's man too!!!!!!), The protagonist is boring, weak and pathetic. The scrip is mess and many scenes are totally unnecessary and only in there to fill the masses of gaps in this joke of a film. Some of the jokes and sketches are blatantly stolen from other comedies which is obvious from the start. It's a massive shame that people from all over the world will see this film as a representation of British comedy. There are many other low budget films far superior to this one that should get international distribution and acknowledgement.The only positive thing I can say about this film is that the acting was not that bad, one slight saving grace of the film. Very slight.The trailer for this film showed an interview with a girl who had just watched the film, she said after you watch it you will be quoting lines all night. The only line I can remember, which was just before I was about to turn the film off, was when the police office said to our protagonist 'We can do it next year', referring to resolving the main threat in the film, that's how badly the police want to catch the bad guys 'we can do it next year'. Who ever made this film ask yourself this --> If the police don't care, there is no purpose to the plot, when the main character is only slightly bothered, why should the audience be interested?If you are unfortunate enough to watch this film and understand what i mean by this, the line will make you realises how bad this film is.How this got 7 on IMDb amazes me, the only thing I can think of is that everyone that was in the cast or crew gave it a high rating.One other thing that I noticed which angered me so much about this film is that the sound track is plagiarised. I'm not 100% sure about this but there is a song that's played which sounds almost identical to a Bloc Party song. The film makers paid some muppet to write a song that sounds very similar to the bloc party song, this is a cheap trick, if i were Bloc Party I would be phoning my lawyers. If you can't pay an artist for the rights to use their material maybe use a smaller band or an unsigned artist and give them exposure, don't rip off a popular track to try and create audience familiarity. This kinda put's the icing on the horrible cake for me.

littleanna_7 If you're after a movie that is deeper with a more plausible plot line than the average Kevin Smith film, then Pulp probably isn't for you.If, however, you want some good British banter, geek-based humour, and a rather ridiculous premise for a storyline, then I'd highly recommend this little indie gem.The story follows Tony, a struggling comic book writer, and his two best friends Rick and Keith, as they launch The Sodomizer, their last attempt at succeeding in the comic book industry, at the British International Comic Show, whilst working undercover to find a money laundering gang (see, ridiculous storyline). The thing is, the plot quickly becomes secondary to the characters, some less lovable (Tyler) than others, their relationships, and the genuinely laugh out loud moments. Apart from the slight over-use of the f-word (although I'm probably a little older than the target audience), there really isn't much not to like about this rather silly, eccentric, geek- tastic film. Beats watching episodes 1-3 of Star Wars at any rate.
