nadinesalakovv As a Brit, i rarely watch British movies due to my personal taste of simply disliking them, but 'Retreat' is a rare exception. The main plot is catchy and i'm glad i gave this film a chance. 'Retreat' has great performances, very good directing along with a nice film score. The bad guy became a bad guy by circumstance. The film becomes an issue of if he can be trusted or not. The husband and wife characters don't know whether they can trust him / whether this guy is paranoid and crazy or whether he's telling them the truth, the viewers are made to relate to these husband and wife characters due to the movie doing a very good job of keeping the audience in the dark as well.'Retreat' is a very tense thriller with a minimal cast, there should be more movies like this with a great plot and with literally only a few characters, films like this are proof that a movie doesn't need to have a big number cast to make a film great. The only thing that is wrong with this flick is a couple of comments of sexism coming from the bad guy "Jack", example - when he tells the husband that they can't allow the woman to make all the decisions, and the scene where he puts food out and tells her to make him breakfast, when he can easily make it himself (but then again that particular scene was a means to an end for that moment, it was set up to simply build a tense outcome, but still they could have done that outcome in a different way without the sexism).'Retreat' has quite a few plot-twists and the very end scene is shocking and unexpected. If you like thrillers, i recommend renting this film on Amazon Prime Video.
SnoopyStyle Kate (Thandie Newton) and Martin (Cillian Murphy) go to the isolated Blackholme Island off Scotland to escape London. They were there back in happier times in 2002. They are struggling with marital problems about a miscarriage. The power goes out. Martin is injured while trying to fix the generator. They call Doug for help on the radio but they get no help. Then they find a bloodied unconscious man. The man claims to be Private Jack Corman (Jamie Bell) and that there is a deadly worldwide airborne flu. The couple is suspicious of the erratic Jack. The trio try their best to make an intense psychological thriller. The main problem is that the movie has one tone and one gear. It's steady and unrelenting. Jack doesn't change. He starts off scary and stays there. It may be more compelling to start off sane and build to crazy. It's intense but it feels like a manufactured thing. It's not realistic that Martin believes anything Jack says. Jack is basically acting like a paranoid mental case. There is nothing to prove his case other than his word. The movie needs to give the audience the permission to believe in Jack but it never does.
Tyla Thomas I am definitely a fan. Retreat was a good, fast paced movie with some well placed and unexpected twists. I was thoroughly brought in by the film, constantly feeling intrigued and trying to figure out what could possibly happen next. Granted, some may say it as full at first, with which no could not disagree, but the rest of the movie really made up for it. Everything just added up to make this film thoroughly enjoyable.Never did I expect some of the content in this film, especially the ending (sit this one out, and don't give up on it - it gets SO much better toward the ending). I don't want to give spoilers, but expect a shocking turn of events, right up to the last minute.Sit back and enjoy... If you can... You might just be too excited to sit still.
tompb9 I went into this film with no expectations as I'd never heard of it before. It was a random rental (it was between this and Shark Night!) but had a strong cast so gave me a bit of hope it might be decent.Firstly... if the idea of three people alone in a house together for an entire film sounds dull then this one is not for you.I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with this film and enjoyed it more as it went on. Thandie Newton was very annoying early on in the film and Cillian Murphy wasn't far behind her. The characters also made some stupid decisions which is always annoying. But having watched it though it was actually a well acted and clever little thriller. One thing I liked about the film was that it keeps you guessing throughout... is he lying? is there a virus? should they trust him? The audience was in the same position as the characters not really knowing what was going on outside the door. And the conclusion was satisfying without leaving questions hanging. Not massively exciting, but all round a pretty decent film.
