Mikel3 Saw this one the other night, what a hoot I loved it. It's one of those fun Mexican movies starring the wrestler/superhero 'Santo'. In this one he is called on to help a father protect his daughter from a group of Vampire women who want to make her their next queen. She is about to turn 21 and it's that time for her conversion. It's seems she was destined for this fate from birth and has a vampire bat like mark on her arm to prove it. No not bite marks, an actual image of a bat on her shoulder area. Looks like a bat tattoo. Of course daddy says not to fret it's a common enough type birthmark. He hopes that will relieve her anxiety about it. Yes, I'm sure many girls have vampire bat birthmarks on their upper arm. It's no secret I love these films. This is probably the best I've seen yet starring Santo. For American distributions they renamed him 'Samson'. Yet when he is in the ring the crowd is clearly cheering for 'Santo...Santo...'. Guess they didn't want to bother dubbing those crowd scenes too. Oh and what a surprise the crowd is in for when Samson/Santo unmasks one of his opponents in the ring. The creature under the mask looks like the wolf man ! At least he knew to return to his own corner when the bell rang. There was some very good imagery in the first ten or fifteen minutes of the film when the vampire women first awaken from their 200 year nap. You just have to get past the fake looking exteriors of their castle. Before they gain the illusion of beauty they're pretty darn scary looking. The makeup on the waking vampires had a certain unique even bizarre look to it often found in Mexican horror films. The look of the monsters is a refreshing change from American films of the same time period. This is not a film for everyone. I happen to have a taste for these sort of gems. It does have it's moments and that's enough for me. I enjoyed it and would recommend it for other fans of Mexican horror films.
stolen_car This is one of the funniest movies and the greatest Santo movie, perhaps only challenged by "Santo el enmascarado de plata y Blue Demon vs. los monstruos." It should be enjoyed with friends, as then you could discuss the progressive social critique this movie lays down. Not really.
coverme6 God, what a horrible piece of fluff this is! What kind of afruit would enjoy seeing a cheesy black and white movie abouthow a tubby Mexican wrestler battles a bunch of withered oldhags that are supposed to be vampires, who slither around theircrypts ordering their bloodsucking slaves to do their dirty workfor them? I viewed this movie in an episode of "Mystery ScienceTheatre 3000" in one of their earlier seasons, and by golly, Icould tell that Joel and the 'bots completely suffered whilewatching this turd from south of the border. Quite frankly, thismovie is not worth the pain and anguish that you experiencewhile vi
Apearlo I mean the above as a good thing. Used for the last season six episode of MST3K, this Mexican wrestler film has good cinematography, an interesting plot, cool vampires... okay, so the girl's father has a goofy, dubbed voice and the wrestling scenes (one with a buff vampire!) might be tedious for some (like me). This movie has turned me on to Mexican horror of the 50's and 60's -- is that wrong?
