Was this remade just for black audiences? Is this the New Millenium Blackploitation?
Sometimes, you just don't mess with an original. Ask Classic Coke & New Coke.

Like many others, I wonder WHY this was made at all. In the very few moments I sat through, I could tell it was a verbatim re-do of the original. So, why? The talents of the actors are better showcased elsewhere. It's not really fair for me to rate it, as I did not (could not) watch the whole thing.

I'm such a huge fan of the original film-so many strong actresses and it was SO funny...I was excited to see the remake. Less than 20 minutes into it, I was already disappointed. That's an under-statement. Not only were the choices for the lead actresses terrible, but some of the dialogue was VERBATIM from the original film! If you're trying to match it that closely, you'd better make sure that you SURPASS the original film. It just didn't happen. Not to mention that some of my favorite characters were not only not as funny as the original actresses, but they weren't funny AT ALL! The dialogue/lines may have been the same, but the delivery was an epic fail (Ouiser, for instance...originally played by Shirley Mclain-hilarious-in the remake-not even remotely funny, even though many of the lines were exactly the same.)I would say the ONLY scene that made the movie a little good/worth watching was the scene between M'Lynn and Shelby just before the transplant operation. It added something deeper to that whole part of the film to have M'Lynn say she was glad she could give life to Shelby more than once-that was a good addition.Other than that, don't bother. Watch the original twice instead.

While I loved the original Steel Magnolias movie and really like Queen Latifah & Phylicia Rashad, I just think this movie just did not come together. The lines seemed a little robotic and about half way through I felt I was forcing myself to continue sitting through it. The dynamics of the cast in the original movie was just not here in this remake. The original movie left you with a warm, nostalgic feeling. This movie left you with a feeling you were glad it was over. I don't understand why it was necessary to remake this movie with an all black cast. It didn't add anything to the movie and sadly the actresses and actors chosen here did not convey the essence of the characters they were supposed to portray. Don't waste your time with this one.
