Suman Shakya Aditya Chopra made "Mohobbatein" after "DDLJ," which was much inspired by "Dead Poet's Society". Similarly, Karan Johar tries to bring a high school musical "Student of the Year" after the success of his romantic musicals like "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", "Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam" and "Kabhi Albida Na Kehna." But unfortunately, "Student of the Year" nowhere touches the feel of a high school drama. It just presents a very superficial story with very passable and unrealistic characters. They story hasn't succeeded to depict a high school story nor a good romantic story. The new actors fail to create a freshness due to the unnatural or the half baked story the film develops. Instead, they appear brash and annoying. You just wonder what the hell the central theme was and where the story is going. (Was it about the rivalry between students for a trophy, a love triangle, or sorting a family drama.) As a result, none of the stories gets to develop thoroughly. The hit songs and production values just coat the weak film as a thin layer of caramel which tries to grip you a bit though you won't love it much. Well, except for few foot tapping songs like "Disco Deewane" I won't remember the film for anything else.Rating: 1 star out of 4

Rehman Khilji Student of the year is purely in every way a KARAN JOHAR flick. Karan Johar yet again was the best as he is, however, there were few flaws in the movie. Karan Johar movies must have a rich family involved, otherwise most of the scenes would never make a sense. Similarly, this movie is about a Rich student, a poor student and their friendship. Typically again, the poor wants to be rich and rich kid is having an unsatisfied father. The characters have done great justice with their roles. Aliya Bhatt was looking amazing in the songs however, her acting skills were not that impressive. But since she is from the Bhatt Clan, much can be expected from her in future. (Bhatt family is keeping up with the kissing scene part ;). The main problem with the movie is that Abhimanyo is suppose to be a kid from a poor family background, making it to a high ranking school upon scholar ship. But through out the movie, his clothes, accessories and everything which revolves around his character does not portray anything which can display him as a person from a poor family. Big Blunder on Karan Johar's part. You have to show the poor kid poor dude, adding two scene's of his family having a regular dinner on a dinning table does not make him poor. Like the clothes he wear, the swim suit, his bicycle his clothes, Ray Ben glasses, like come on...!! show him a bit poor. Aliya Bhaat have done justice, she worked fine in role of a spoil depressed rich kid, but as stated she was giving fine looks in the songs but not otherwise. Dhawan, was the pick of the movie, although i am afraid non of these actors might have a very good run in Bollywood, but they are a good addition. All the songs are rocking, something like which you can hear over and over again. Karan Johar should also have a invited Shahrukh for an appearance with Kajol.!!! The songs have been very well choreographed and use of three/four choreographer have put a different spice to the movie, each one have their own different style. Rishi Kapoor in an a sort of GAY Principal is simply excellent, Rishi Sir hats of to you for choosing such role in this age...!! You have truly shown that after all you are Ranhbir's father..!! Nevertheless, a nice movie, a good choice to see over the weekend. Songs are brilliant. Rest in short a karan johar's richie rich movie. something not happening in real life. The biggest disagreement i had was with the ending of the movie. All the friends should have remained single and in the end they should have shown that friendship is much more greater then love. Shanaya marrying Abhi was not a good deal. Abhi role was of a selfish, cheap arrogant person. Rest of the supporting actors were good at their respective place.

Vijayanand Phad This is not just the typical KJo film, with lots of crying & Shahrukh ! Yeh, sorry to say but I was never a big fan of KJo's KKHH, K3G etc etc & Shahrukh too !So watching this movie had no expectations but it surprised me at few times in the film.Obviously film has some shadow of Karan but this movie is more realistic with no much emotional drama & crying. Some funny dialogues at serious moments make the movie light & fun to enjoy. Both the actors have done brilliant job. They look promising & have definitely long way to go.Aliya Bhatt has done good looking charming girl role but got very few dialogues. More disappointment comes with some stupid role by Rishi (part is gay) Unnecessarily too many songs & almost 30 mins of wedding ceremony (as movie is based on school life)Also, for first 20 mins, complete introduction, you can miss that for sure.Kajol effect is awesome. Looks really nice in those 4-5 seconds !Final verdict... One time typical watchable bollywood film. See for good & promising actors.

jahangirhussain74 SOTY is definitely not the movie of the year. Given the fact that it was directed by a maverick and talented filmmaker Karan Johar, one should keep in mind that SOTY is no Kuch Kuch Hota Hai or K3G. Storywise, the film looked like a rehash of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. It's the story of three people, Abhimanyu, Rohan and Shanaya (newcomers Sidharth, Varun and Alia) who come to terms with life in St. Theresa School (or college I don't know). Who comes out as the eventual winner in this battle of supremacy forms the rest of the story. Newcomers Sidharth, Varun and Alia show much promise as first-timers. Sidharth looks confident though he has no background in acting. He looks fab and got good dialogues too, as is the case with most of the movies of Karan Johar. Varun is handsome and has expressive eyes. This kid could go a long way in the future. Alia is simply brilliant, given the fact that her father and half-sister, Mahesh and Pooja Bhatt are from the same acting background. She looks super-confident as a debutante and looks gorgeous too. Rishi Kapoor was annoying as a homosexual dean of St. theresa's. There are a lot of things though which should've been well-written or explained at least from a director of Karan Johar's caliber. 1) I didn't get whether St. theresa is a school or college 2) the relationship between Rohan and his father should've been better explained. Rohan's father is a man who has all the evil intentions for his son. His character is so one dimensional. 3) too much westernization of the plot like prom night, cheerleading, speeding in the middle of the road with no interference from the cops, parties look so un-indianized that the traditional song "Radha" sticks out like a sore thumb. 4) the ending seems too abrupt and unrealistic. The songs of the film were good but copied from old classical songs, like the late Nazia Hassan's magical 1980's song "Disco Deewane" and Mohammed Rafi's classic hit song "Gulabi Aankhen Jo Teri Dekhi" (from The Train). I certainly didn't expect this kind of stuff from Karan Johar. Did his creativity go out the window? Overall, SOTY is definitely a one-time watch. You won't be disappointed with the performances of the three lead actors.
