welshtrekker Seems reviewers here missed the point or simply do not really get the horror genre, its eclectic mix of thresholds, how it can transform quickly and how it is not just about Brad Pitt killing zombies.True horror movies take what we view as ordinary, run-of-the-mill, and take that to a place, usually a dark place, and present something totally unexpected. Here is a movie that does just that. Believe me, when you see how this movie goes, you will be glad you sat down to watch it. Here we have a killer sentient car, able to transform into other car models (wow...what a paint job!) at will, and tempts people to sit inside - to consume their flesh. Following an accident, the battered car is towed into a Chicago police impound garage. For the employees trapped inside, it is a fight for survival against a malicious being...The car from hell idea is no newbie to the horror genre but what this film does with the idea - sure is folks! I am not adding spoilers here.I love horror movies where the evil transcends from the usual: the serial killer, the thing in the lake, the alien beings, the possession... That's all been there, done that, and few films manage to bring something new with those premises. So, when I read about a killer car morphing into other car shapes and outwitting humans - I just had to see it. Last time I saw a killer car idea as good as this one was actually called The Car, a 70s horror movie. The simple premises are always the best ones in this genre. This one goes into overdrive and pits steel against bone in 90 mins of pure thrill time.
Ralphus2 I wish to reinforce what several other reviewers have striven to persuade potential viewers of "Super Hybrid": that it is not a bad film--certainly not as bad as its low IMDb rating would suggest. I won't go so far as to say it's a great film, or even a very good one, but it does supply what so many other recent horrors do not: genuine entertainment.A large part of the success is the kick-a** shape-shifting car. In what I presume is its 'base' form, it's a matte black '77 Chevy Nova (I think!). But it transforms itself into various other familiar muscle cars or pickups. If you love sweet rides, this movie will appeal. The driving chase sequences in the parking station are really well done also and the tire-squealing and rubber burning are further bonuses for rev-heads.The car's biggest problem is under the hood. The CG effects for the big blobby gelatinous turtle-without-a-shell thing that is the actual creature 'unmasked' are pretty...um...poor. But hey! It doesn't matter so much. The whole film has a made-for-TV look to it, and some of the acting is pure daytime telly, so a viewer shouldn't really expect too much effects-wise. Besides, the acting isn't so bad. The worst is the boyfriend in the beginning, but we don't see much of him. The a**hole boss, Ray, has his moments too, but you can put up with it.One small thing I liked about this movie is that certain common sense idiocies that film makers often perpetrate, and which infuriate viewers, are avoided in "Super Hybrid". For example, when escaping the car in the parking lot, some characters run behind pylons to avoid being hit, instead of just running straight ahead to get chomped up; that's the smart thing to do, but so many film makers don't seem to like common sense choices like that. In one scene they try to ride some big dumb-a** police Harley (?) up some stairs. In "Ghost Rider" they may have pulled something like that off, but here the makers say, "No", and stupid ungainly bike just topples over a coupla steps in and riders are unceremoniously deposited on their a**es. As I said, it's a small thing--and there are plenty of other things that make no sense at all--but I noticed it and thought it was a smart touch.Comparisons have been made in these pages with 1977's "The Car" and, while the earlier movie is far better in my estimation, it's not an invalid proposal. The key with both these movies is the car itself. As the stars of the show, they need to be as cool and bad-a** as they are. While not quite as awesome as the car of the earlier film, this shape-shifting mo-fo is still pretty darn cool and, as stated above, THAT is the real drawcard here. "Super Hybrid" is pretty much a success in this all important department. It's this coupled with decent pacing, well conceived and executed action sequences, and a solid score that elevate this above the dross it could so easily have been. I want to mention the score once more. It's not something you expect to praise in a film like this, but I thought it was effective, unobtrusive when required, and well-suited to the scenes it illustrated. The opening aerial shot makes particularly effective use of the music. So, for a silly, low budget, B-grade flick, "Super Hybrid" ticks the important 'Entertaining' box and a few others besides. Ignore the nay-sayers. Car buffs will likey and true horror fans (despite the lack of gore) will find something to enjoy. A solid 5.5 to 6 from me.
hopla68 I was a little surprised by the harsh reviews ( a whole 2) that this movie got. When I first heard about it more then a year or so ago ( after seeing " the car" way back in the day and movies like " duel" ) the idea sounded intriguing. After that the movie kinda went off the radar to pop up again through the usual channels not too long ago. And I must say its a nice little movie. In the " evil car" sub genre there aren't that many peers..at least not besides the fore-mentioned titles that I can remember and this is a worthy addition. The movie deals of course with a car that eats people, the way it lures them into its interior is reasonably self explanatory after watching the trailer and reading the synopsis..but it works. The car is sufficiently menacing and if you you buy into the idea that it lurks an underground parking garage / impound yard ( after being towed there because it was involved in an accident); you have yourself a nice little cat and mouse thriller. And yes, the characters aren't that fleshed out ( although better as you might expect). The ones who survive and wont comes as a mild surprise and the idea behind it - the car- is actually rather cool. What I always found lacking in the fore-mentioned " the car" is that you never see who or what drives it, just dives of a cliff if memory serves me right and that is it. Here you do see what.." drives" it. The transformation scenes - from model to model- are nicely done and there is indeed a thrill or two to be found here. So..yes of course there are " better" movies, however in this sub genre to my knowledge there are not..and no duel doesn't count. So forget the fact that it was shelved for two years. Put your mindset to a nicely done little thriller that wants to entertain in a somewhat gritty and serious manner and its a good way to spend 1.5 hrs.
peteranderson975 Synopsis a car prowls the streets of Chicago hunting humans when it gets smashed up in a collision with another car. It is towed to the 29th district garage where the staff quickly realise the car is alive and it is hunting them all down. This film is really not very good. The basic idea may work on paper but it is basically stupid. Anyone with any training in biology may have to be restrained from attacking the screen when they hear the rubbish theories by the characters when they are trying to figure out what the car is. Maybe that was actually a subtle joke about poor educational standards. The film is fairly tedious with lots of running around and driving cars about in the garage. The killings are fairly tame and bloodless and most came about from script induced acts of stupidity. The padding is quite obvious when the car, which can change to look like any car, keeps doing this even when no-one comes near it to see it. I didn't really care about the characters. Oded Fehr's character Ray is so incredibly stupid and he's written that way to ensure that a weak idea for 30 minute short is padded out into a full length feature film. The main protagonist Tilda, played by Shannon Beckner, also annoyed me a lot. The actors are okay but they are poorly written.CGI plays a big part in this film but it really lacks credibility or imagination and instead looks like just another bland spectacle more suited to a derivative first-person-shooter game.I don't really now who this would appeal to because it really didn't appeal to me.rating 3/10
