ComedyFan2010 I don't care how many penguin animation movies are out there. After all we have a lot of movies with humans and they are great as long as the story is a good one.It is a bit confusing though why penguins were chosen for this one. Surfing somewhere in Hawaii, penguins, really? Seems another species would be more fitting. But whatever let's go with penguins. The story is not original. Any adult watching it will know how it ends and what happens next. For the kids though who are the main target of the movie it can be pretty original. And it shows some good lessons. Although I am not sure showing kids that winning isn't important is that good. Sure, friends are more important than trophies. But achieving one's goal deserves a reward. And kids should know it before they get out into competitive world. The animation was alright. When it came to water it was great. All the waves and at some point there were even little drops on the camera, that is supposed to be a documentary camera from the movie. This was really good. The voices are also very good. I enjoyed Jeff Bridges as Z, he kept on reminding me of his Dude in The Big Lebowsky. The humor is really not original. I think it is good for the kids but adults watching with them will just have a smile here and there. The chicken was the one funny character and at the same time he was pretty useless for the story.
Dylan Gallagher I really liked this movie! It was quite unique and far from cliché like a lot of other films, and the humour in it was totally admirable! For a children's movie, it was genuinely entertaining! It has this imperfect nature about it that made it almost perfect, and for that I applaud the writers and directors. The characters were all enjoyable to watch except two, "Reggie Belafonte" played by James Woods, and "Tank 'The Shredder' Evans" played by Diedrich Bader, but in saying that, every film needs its villain-like characters, so it's totally cool. I really loved the character "Chicken Joe", played by Jon Heder; he was always amusing to watch and he had this stoner, peace-and-love, hippy surfer dude vibe about him, and he was always so mellow and carefree! I love it! And not to forget, hilarious! I'm actually astounded that it's only rated 6.8/10 on IMDb because I feel as if it deserves a little more recognition than that. It's a complete stand-out and not just your average animated drama that tends to have a lot of "seen it" and "been done before" moments.. I guess people love cliché..Overall, a totally enjoyable film that I'd definitely re-watch, especially with my nieces and nephews. I'm not sure if they've seen it or not, I'll have to ask them, but I think they would love it!Radical, dude! 8.5/10
Jon_Snow_21 I really like this movie because it brings back memories from when I loved it as a kid. I remember watching it over and over again, and after watching it again now I still like it. The reason I like this movie is kind of hard to explain so this might come out weird : it's "cool". The main character Cody Maverick is just really "cool" and awesome. Again another personal preference: the movie is about surfing:my favourite sport. I really like surfing and since this movie is about surfing and they depict it well, it scores major points in my book. The surfing montage where Cody gets the hang of surfing is beautiful. I really like the cast of supporting characters as well: chicken Joe, Big Z, Lani and the others. I really like the final surf off. It really sets itself apart from other movies by not making the main character win literally but figuratively since he helps his friend. Surf's up is also an extremely funny movie and I love it's mockumentary style. I really like the fact that during the movie big z trains Cody to let go and stuff like that. I think they should've left out the chicken Joe expedition thing and they should've made the movie longer. All in all even though Surf's up is not perfect but it's funny, "cool", has good voice acting , has a nice final surf off and is about surfing.
Karl Self This is simply a very entertaining computer-animated cartoon about a bunch of surfing penguins. It's shot in a unique "mockumentary" style which makes the movie look fresh and surprisingly, and also allows the filmmakers to adhere less strictly to story development, and allows them to load the movie with a joke per second (NB, the movie also delivers a solid, intriguing, well-developed plot, but the mockumentary style allows the storytelling to be a lot faster, sharper, more off the cuff.Paradoxically, to reproduce the -- usually undesirable -- "wobbly hand- held cam" effect in CGI, the studio had to go to fairly extreme length, with a cameraman filming the CGI framework off a large screen with a specially revamped hand-held camera.Anyway, the result is a very fresh, very funny cartoon that looks simply amazing (those waves look wayyyy better than in reality). The voice artists also did an amazing job. This one probably caters more to adult viewers, but kids will certainly get a hoot out of it, too. I can highly recommend it!PS: try this if the also penguin-themed "Happy Feet" bored your socks off.
