funkyfry This film, which features a production credit for star Randolph Scott and direction by H. Bruce Humberstone, is typical of his post-war output with Columbia. Jocelyn Brando appears, without much to do, but the film does have some nice bits for Richard Boone, Leo Gordon, and Lee Van Cleef (all of whom would later reappear even more memorably in the Ranown series with Budd Boetticher later in the 50s/early 60s). There are some strange shifts of focus.... early in the film, the focus is more on Scott's family, and later it is more focused on Dennis Weaver's sheriff character. The Ranown films would benefit from better direction by Boetticher, better stories by Burt Kennedy and Elmore Leonard -- but this one is a step in the right direction, with Boone and Van Cleef in particular giving their characters some nasty meat on the bones, and Scott's characters gradually becoming more convincingly bitter and hard-edged.
rashid Come on, guys, this a classic action western of high calibre. Its got a great plot that builds up to a satisfying climax. Its a kind of film that lets go and wants you to enjoy yourself. The Budd Boectcher westerns are great, but that can be a bit talky and long drawn out. But Ten wanted men is has solid acting, writing and I have seen a plenty of times and will do so. Randolph Scott, as ever, is dependable and solid which parries nicely with Boone's brooding persona. The scenery is superb and i liked the beginning of the film where Alfonsa Bedoya kidnaps Skip Homier and his father and you are fooled into thinking that the action will soon start. granted the film takes time to let loose but, boy, when it does its like a firecracker. A must see film! Forget the other reviews!
alexandre michel liberman (tmwest) Ten Wanted Men is one of the best of Scott's films. It is not in the same category as the ones he made with Budd Boetticher and it can not be compared with them. But it is great fun nonetheless. The beginning, when they play a bad taste joke on the two Stewarts sets the violent tone which will prevail throughout the film. There is no shortage of violence here, they kill without thinking twice and there are plenty of action scenes. There are great actors too. Skip Homeier is the fearless young guy and his first showdown is one of the best moments. Richard Boone is the bad guy which became obsessed with love for Maria (Donna Martell). Leo Gordon and Lee Van Cleef are the bad, bad guys and they are quite good at it. Dennis Weaver is the sheriff which cannot do much with so many gunfighters in town. Irving Ravetch, one of the story writers has to his credit two very important films: Hud and Hombre. If you enjoy a good action western, do not miss Ten Wanted Men.
Char-4 I have been a fan of Randolph Scott westerns since childhood and enjoy most of his work, but this movie plods along so slowly that you wish that everyone would shoot each other early and end the misery. The good guys & gals are too noble and self-righteous and the villains are obviously rotten, evil and stupid. The best thing about the film is the color scenery.1 * out of 5.
