Claudio Carvalho In St. Louis, the scientists Dr. William Hauser (Kevin Beyer), Shannon Muir (Kristy Swanson) and Kent (Dan Buran) accidentally create a black hole during an experiment. While investigating the phenomenon, Dr. Hauser and Kent die and the army comes to their laboratory under the command of General Ryker (David Selby). Shannon tries to call the prominent Dr. Eric Bryce (Judd Nelson), but the scientist does not answer the phone since he misses his daughter Kayley (Julia Sinks) after the divorce to his ex-wife Elizabeth (Jennifer Quackenbush). When he is contacted, he comes to the laboratory and soon he finds that the experiment has also unleashed a creature that feeds of energy. The Powers That Be wants a nuclear attack against the creature, but Eric warns that the action will increase the black hole. He also believes that the creature may be destroyed and the black hole closed if they are attracted to each other. However, only General Ryker supports his theory while General Tate (Peter Mayer) wants to bomb the location. "The Black Hole" is a stupid and corny thriller. The one-dimension characters are not developed and Eric in the beginning is an alcoholic scientist that misses his family and in the corny end is a hero in love with Shannon, who seems to be the pivot of his divorce. The military personnel cannot be that imbecile, using the usual weapons against the energy creature to be vaporized on the next scene. The idea of bombing the black hole and the creature is taken by people without any knowledge is totally unintelligent. And the character that performs the President is disrespectful so ridiculous he is. My vote is three. Title (Brazil): "Buraco Negro" ("Black Hole")
parodycollector As I've stated before, on my first review posted to this site (which regrettably was of an even cheesier Sci-Fi flick than this one) I can forgive major flaws in scientific believability. . .for the sake of the movie. . .First I'll name a couple of pluses, pluses that didn't exist in the first movie I saw of this "4 pack set" (Supernova) A plus was the acting wasn't terrible, despite what they had to work with, they didn't lose my interest, obviously inexperienced actors/actresses but not terrible. Also, the destruction of the Arch would be how I would expect it to fall--sorta. . .that's it for good. . .now some of the bad (as much as I can fit anyway) The writers on this one were awful, the presidential 'speech' sounded totally unprofessional, and like something no living president I know of would ever consider saying to the country. This thing that feeds of Electricity, from the get-go, I'm saying TURN OFF THE FREAKING POWER PEOPLE!!!! If that's what you think is feeding the black hole, turn off the power, and it can't feed anymore can it? With all the extras that were hired who did a convincing job on their shock and dismay, it's ashame no-one thought to turn off the juice. The Black Hole was very 2 dimensional, perhaps it's just me, but last I checked such a thing is not possible, it would be growing up and down as well, in all directions, and it wouldn't skip One Metropolitan Square because the Arch looks more fun to destroy right after the stadium. My biggest problem is at the end of the movie though. They get this electric thing to go to the truck by SHUTTING OFF POWER. . .so why is the truck driving through a St. Louis with stop lights, city buildings lit up, Xmas lights etc? But, not only did they forget that the power was out for this ending, they forgot the Arch is gone. . .you can see clearly when the truck is driving the red light on the top of the Arch, and because that red light focuses the attention of the eye, you see the whole Arch, in perfect condition, unscathed. . .Additionally none of the buildings near where this black hole is being hit by Mr Electric are damaged at all. . .they did a decent job in the movie maintaining the plot until the end and then it really fell apart.Again I applaud the actors for doing their best with the terrible script write here, the dialog was terrible--but that's not the actors fault. . This would have been a 4, but the ending killed it for me completely. You can't have the St. Louis Arch be destroyed and then magically reappear, and you can't have electricity eating thingamabob attached to a truck because it's the only thing with power when you've got Christmas Lights, and the rest of the city's lights on. . .fail
harold-goedhart I generally like SF movies but they need to have some "this could be true" or scientific realism. This movie shows a black hole on earth and a creature that is connected with it? I could not stand it half way and watched the other 50% on fast forward. The story line is so typical that it shows nothing new. This movie is a waste of time and effort, sorry to be so negative. It could have been better without the alien creature and a more scientific approach. I think people that rent / watch this movie are very conscience about if things that are shown are possible and appeal to the SF sense. I like the basic idea that something really bad can happen in a particle accelerator because of "hurting God's feelings" by discovering more than we should or do things we no nothing about and therefor taking risks beyond our comprehension...
EdVance Two weeks before this I read Gregory Bendfords COSM. When the movie started I thought no way, it almost looked that this was going to be much fun. But as you know, there are so many great stories written, than why are the new scifi movies only about special effects, and everybody is forgetting the base, a good story. After watching this, I really thought what did I see, were did the time go. Calling this movie scifi because there is a black hole in it, is a bit mediocre.Better watch 'The day the earth stood still', special effects are simple, and it's black and white. But someone paid attention to the story.
