Synopsis

Dominic works round the clock: nights making biscotti for his family's bakery in a working-class Italian neighborhood in Pittsburgh, then days downtown where he's a specialist in firing people at a company that negotiates mergers. He's thrown for a loop with he learns that Bella, an elderly neighbor who's his family's closest friend, has but a few months to live. All her life, she's saved money in coffee cans for her daughter, Lucca's, wedding, but Lucca is off in foreign lands, initially as a Peace Corps volunteer, and doesn't need a man. Dominic vows to bring Lucca home and convince her to marry him to fulfill Bella's most fervent wish. What will Lucca say?

Zeusalicious I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I initially was turned off by the idea of a Scott Baio movie, but he did an excellent job. I was very impressed. The movie is a very tender and sweet movie and the acting is the high point. At times heavy handed in the plot, it is forgivable by the excellent portrayal. I highly recommend this movie. The actress portraying Bella was particularly noteworthy. Here smile was the most memorable part of the movie. The other thing I liked about this movie was the basic plot, which is that of a man who chased a career tenaciously only to find it didn't seem to fit with the recipe of his life. When faced with the incongruity of the life he had built and the life he felt, he was willing to allow his mind to follow his heart to a new life.
lisaa7002 I personally think that Scott Baio has grown up quite nicely. That being said...There have been two movies recently that have really gotten to me. This, and "Love the Hard Way". Usually a movie has to be a good romance for me to really love it, & I would not categorize this as a romance, but it just really hit me.I feel this is a movie about the relationship between Bella and her "sons" - all three of the "orphaned" boys, but of course mostly between Bella & Scott's character. It quite reminds me of "About a Boy" - another movie that wasn't a great romance, but was about the love you have for your family- blood related or not. This movie shows a real portrayal of what lengths you go to & the things that you will do for those that you love. It just really touched me.
kastellos A very good tearjerker. Scott Baio is amazingly good as is the entire cast. The accents of Bella and Massimo are not good (although I'm not Italian, I grew up in a strong working-class Italian neighborhood) but they don't really take away from their performances. The new (i.e. relatively unknown) actress who plays Lucca is a gem. I would like to see here more often. Shuler Hensley as Pino wrenches the heart. The story line is far-fetched, but the acting and setting are so good, they come very, very close to making it entirely believable. The Pittsburgh backdrop is gorgeous and greatly adds to the film.If you're jaded and not sentimental or do not come from an ethnic background you may not like it, but if you're a sentimental Italian, or Greek, or Spaniard, or Lebanese, etc., I think you will enjoy it and use up a box of tissues.
onceinawhile A real surprise for me. It was my girlfriend's night to choose the movie and, yes, I groaned when I saw the DVD cover.. "Scott Baio? Are you kidding?" but I really enjoyed it, even though I never figured out how the first-time-director gypsy chick as fate metaphor ever got past the producer or distributor. Baio, Kristin Minter and Rosemary Prinz were solid and the production values were impressive for an independent film. It didn't surprise me to learn later that the film (and Baio) won prizes at six or eight film festivals. And, honestly, even though some of the stereotyped accents and behavior bugged me, the movie left films like "Big Fat..." in the dust, especially when I figured out that the catering budget on Greek Wedding was probably bigger than the whole budget for this one.So, in spite of myself, I actually watched it more than once. I recommend it if you like gentle comedy, food, big loud parties and stories about people that fall in love in spite of themselves. Even with the gypsy.
