Jurjen van der Hoek I was really impressed by this great movie and the low rating seems totally unjustified to me. Sometimes you see a painting where it is not the content that catches your eye, but the way that it is painted. I would say that i have that experience with this movie: a well crafted piece of art. The acting is superb, the sound, music and scenery fit well together and create the perfect atmosphere for this story. Not a complex or spectacular story, but intriguing, and beautifully painted. Absolutely a must see for those who appreciate quality.
ajrg54 This is a good movie, but it is not a western. It takes place in the west and is a stylistic tale of a mystery thriller. Woody Harrelson is absolutely perfect as the head of a religious cult. Liam Hemsworth is fine as the somewhat amoral protagonist and his wife Alice Bragga does a fine job though either of the two could have been replaced by someone else but they are not bad. The story depends on atmosphere and they do a good job on that from beginning to end. The problem is if you go into it expecting a shoot em up tale of good and evil you will be disappointed. If you want to see a weird tale with strange twists that no one would have in 1950 this is your movie. More for those who like the twilight zone than John Wayne. I watched it twice, could see it again.
rjacome24 This is the biggest let down of a Western film, it isn't even a Western movie, more of a philosophical boring movie with drama and politics. At best it could be considered a suspense movie with a weird plot that takes way too long, it is boring the entire movie. A Texas ranger is given the task of investigating murders of Mexican immigrants that happen near the Mexico border in a certain Texas town. His wife forces him to take her with him rather than be left home, and so he does because apparently a Texas ranger has to take his wife with him on every job in the 1800s. It gets much worse from there with nothing but a boring story without any western action whatsoever, nothing but continuous drama and only the slightest bit of suspense. The plot also depicts an psychotic evil man who apparently is some sort of "Christian" priest who ironically encourages people to brutally kill others as well as sleep with prostitutes. But the brave Hero is shown to be a good moral atheist. Lmao More politics in Movies. There was no need for anyone's religion to be depicted in this movie, just more political agendas and an incredibly boring plot. Please don't waste your money and more important don't waste your time on this awkward movie.
Reno Rangan Lately I have been watching lots of blacklisted screenplay films. Some of them were really good, but most of them were not. This is one of those, and I'm not convinced. The story wise, it was decent, until the secret was revealed. After that part, it's become completely uninterested. Because that twist was not par with any decent western film. In fact, it was same as what we had seen in those that sets in the modern day themes, but here it was in the second half of the 1800s.So the story was the bad thing for this, but the actors were good. I liked the Liam Hemsworth. Woody Harrelson was not bad either, but his negative kind of role pushes us away from liking him and so the Alice Braga. It opened well, but did not develop and end well. If you are looking for a good western with the story, this is not for you. You should not try this just for the performances, because I don't think it is worth that much. Definitely, I won't recommend it on that ground, but there's always people for all kinds of films, so I won't surprise if you say it is a better film than what I said.4/10
