bmeisner-52135 Seriously I didnt get it what so ever ..didnt really add up and there was no moment where it clicked altogether
bowmanblue 'The Nines' may not be everyone's cup of tea in terms of films, but I can certainly see it acquiring a 'cult following' in time. About the one and only 'mainstream factor' of the film is its star, (a pre-Deadpool) Ryan Reynolds (it also has Melissa McCarthy, but this was long before she hit the big time). Apart from him, it's definitely a 'niche audience' film. For a start it's actually three different stories, all loosely strung together (or so it seems - I won't go into too much detail regarding the plot as there's more to what's going on than meets the eye) by an uneasy sprinkling of science-fiction. Secondly, when you realise what's going on, you'll find that it's one of those 'high concept' science-fiction films which forces you to ask questions, as it doesn't explain every last detail in the movie. However, if you're okay with all that, you'll probably find an undiscovered little gem hiding here.I can definitely understand why Reynolds took the part. He gets the opportunity to spread his natural cheeky charm across three - vastly different - roles, allowing him to show that he's more than just a pretty face (and body in red and black body stocking these days). He definitely carries the film, but it's worth giving Melissa McCarthy a nod, due to the great (and dare I say surprising?) chemistry between the two of them which really makes the film fly by. Hope Davies is also good, but can't compete with the other two leads.'The Nines' is one of those films where you can't say too much more about it for fear of spoiling it, as you'll only be able to watch it and try to figure out what's going on the once. Basically, if you like science-fiction, like Ryan Reynolds, aren't bothered about films with low budgets and no actions and - maybe most importantly - don't mind slightly 'out there' sci-fi concepts then give this one a go. Dare I say it deserves a 9?Who's have thought all koalas are 8s though?
jpndeaton I gave 3 stars because the actors did an exceptional job with a tedious story that could only be interesting to the writer. It meanders and lags often and leaves you with only an expressionless "huh". It feels insulting that the writer and directors respect their audience so little they don't even try to engage them. As much as I respect the work that goes into any production, The Nines disappoints on so many levels: transitions, interest, a point; it makes the viewer feel like you are grasping for any semblance of a point to hold on to to make it through the movie. My only question post viewing is how in the world did this get past script reviews and the almost insurmountable approval process to actually get produced with amazing actors? Statistically speaking this film is an anomaly for which I should have given one extra star.
soger First of all, my vote is not 7 because I'm a human! Second of all, my vote would have been 9 if there weren't two flaws in the movie. But overall it's a pretty interesting movie. On my 30 ears on this planet (that I did not create :D) I've seen a lot of strange movies so I'm not too much impressed but the movie is indeed based on a good and original idea.About those 2 flaws:1) the middle part, with the reality show. I was bored out of my mind. Some pretentious new yorkers living their petty little lives. I did not care about them.2) the balance of the mysteries was not right. One one hand there was Melissa who was a part of his world, clearly, because she stayed but we did not learn much more about her. On the other hand I would have enjoyed more elaborate scenes about the overlapping worlds, for example the guy bumping into himself and more like this. You know it's really hard to express my feelings about the movie, so my apologies if my review makes no sense.
