Richie-67-485852 This is worth seeing for Chuck Heston alone as he just makes movies come alive with his presence. The story here is supposedly he is one of the last healthy men standing and he has nothing but time on his hands of which we see how he spends throughout the movie. I like a good story that invites one to use their imagination. This one does. The premise is a good one. What would you do if you were the supposed last man on earth more or less. Here, this guy has a whole city of which to visit with and do what he wants all day long. Then, at night, he retreats to a fortress he created stocked with all the comforts and goodies one can have for the taking. At some point, however, the premise turns on itself. Why? How much can you eat, drink and carouse? What do you do after the first several months? Fortunately this movie asks and answers this question so the viewer doesn't have too. Strange also to see what appears to be Zombie type creatures way ahead of their time appearing here. Who would know that they were destined to become a movie favorite in the years ahead? I usually like to eat while watching movies. This one is a tough call because there are some scenes that challenge the appetite. Perhaps a snack and a tasty drink will do nicely. The story has been done and redone and brought current in theme but respect this version again if for nothing else Charleton Heston
preppy-3 A biological plague has wiped out most of the population. However some were infected and did not die but became psychotic killers who can't stand light and call themselves the Family. Army doctor Robert Neville (Charlton Heston) is immune to the plague and has to fight the Family every night who want to kill him. He meets others like him but they might turn into killers also. Can he find a cure and convince the Family he can cure them?OK semi-adaptation of "The Last Man on Earth". Heston is good and Rosalind Cash (may she RIP) pops up halfway through and she's great. Also Anthony Zerbe is convincing as the head of the Family. All in all it's very OK but pretty forgettable.
Prismark10 Robert Neville (Charlton Heston) stars in an adaptation of Richard Matheson's science fiction novel, I Am Legend.Set in an apocalyptic world after germ warfare between China and Russia, Neville is the last man on earth after receiving a serum that enabled him to survive. He roams desolate Los Angeles by day, talking to himself. At night bloodthirsty mutants emerge who Neville is intent on killing. The mutants are led by Matthias (Anthony Zerbe), a former television newscaster now in charge of his own cult that has declared war on modern society and what Neville, a doctor and scientist stands for.Neville finds out that he is not the last man on earth as he comes across a group of young people lead by Lisa (Rosalind Cash) who he forms an emotional bond with.Director Boris Sagal managed to do well to show a deserted LA but apart from that his directions lacks flair and instead comes across as cheesy with leader of the mutants dressed as monks in sunglasses, black characters talking in jive. Heston plays his character in stoic manner, it is funny to see him chuckling to himself while watching footage of Woodstock. It is also worth noting that a man who marched alongside with Martin Luther King during the civil rights movement takes part in an interracial romance even though by that time his politics had moved to the right.
mmallon4 I began The Omega Man with some initial trepidation from the not so great editing (including a pointless fade away on zooming out shot) the use of sped up footage and obvious line dubbing; thankfully after that it gets better. It must appreciated the filmmakers clearing the streets of Los Angles with spanning, wide shots of the city in which it is deserted; no easy task. To accomplish this the filmmakers had to film during Sunday morning and due to filming at this golden hour the deserted streets and the golden light reflecting of the buildings has a real beauty to it. I don't know of the film's budget but it does come off feeling like a low budget production but does so in a charming way. The campy 70's sounding music score feels like it's on the verge of killing the mood and being too corny but just about manages to avoid doing so.Charlton Heston's Nevillie feels like predecessor to modern action movie heroes with his use of one liners. The scene in which he pretends to negotiate with a dead salesman at a car dealership feels very Arnold Schwarzenegger. On the other hand I do find there is some Initial unintentional humour coming from seeing Heston dressed as an aristocrat and talking to a chess playing bust of Julius Caesar but once that settles these do showcase some poignant scenes of the last man alive trying to keep himself occupied; also I do love this little world he has created for himself in his apartment. Likewise seeing the later Republican Heston watching and the enjoying the film Woodstock and even reciting lines is intriguingly odd. The Omega Man also features one the earliest on screen interracial kisses between black and white. I don't know if it was intentional that a film about repopulating the Earth has an interracial romance but thankfully doesn't have to call attention to itself. The Omega is a perfect example of Charlton Heston's immense screen presence and his ability to carry a movie as he spends much of the run time alone. When I think "screen presence" several actors will pop into my head, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Clark Gable and of course Charlton Heston.
