NateWatchesCoolMovies That's right, the Onion News Network made a movie, back in 2008, and it's every bit as irreverent, satirical and wantonly bizarre as you would imagine. They have been comically killing it for years with their online platform, and the film is a nice extension of that. It's episodic, meandering and devoid of plot, made up of many little sketches and vignettes, some gut bustingly funny, others just plain odd. I have three favourites which pretty much sum up their inane, Monty Python type shtick: An out of work actor named Bryce Brand (Nick Chinlund is priceless I just a few minutes of screen time) arrives back home from drug rehab and is hounded by his agent to nab new scripts. He promptly falls into a weird new addiction that gets slapped sillily onto the headlines, thus ending his arc with deranged efficiency. Steven Seagal shows up as a fat slob of an action hero aptly named 'The Cock Puncher', a lumbering buffoon who punches people in the cock, naturally. The third, and funniest sequence features a riff on the celebrity roasts of the 60's, with some kind of amazing group of crusty old crooners hurling stinging and incredibly raunchy insults at each other with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. It's tough explain just how funny that bit is in a review, but suffice to say it had me roaring as loud as the obscene bunch of wrinkled baboons in the in the skit. There's a plethora of other sequences which I've since gotten hazy about, but I remember many other instances of pure hilarity to be had. Watch for further celebrity appearances including Eric Stolhanske, Michael Bolton, Richard Fancy, Daniel Dae Kim, Brendan Fletcher, Rodney Dangerfield, Joel McHale and more. Side splitting stuff, if you're into this type of humour.
hideyotsuburaya Onion Movie reminds me of, and even has things in common with, John Landis' Amazon Women On The Moon. one legacy shared is both films sat on the shelf (alright, different shelves) for a few years before lucky enough to get released. Rodney Dangerfield appears in this film, posthumously, owing to this. i'll admit there were a few bits here that went nobly towards redeeming the remaining junkyard of comedy discards. like "armed gunman thwarts armed gunman", just to emphasize i actually watched it. for maximum, if any, viewing pleasure see Onion Movie alongside whatever rowdy inebriated crowd you can invite over this Saturday night
ichocolat The Onion Movie kicks a*s! Who would've thought that a film about 1 1/2 hours of news report could be so entertaining, and hilarious! It is best to leave your mind goes blank, and to not make any assumptions while watching this film. It'll certainly better that way. Hard-hitting jokes, straight-up commentary without the need to be politically correct, and uncanny ability to tickle your funny bones! It is presented in an unassuming way, letting the viewers to decide on its validity. Some viewers may get offended by the jokes, but it is not the intention of the film (or is it?) All in all, a wonderful film, make in an ingenious way, and delivered the right punchlines!
Lee Eisenberg To the list of media satires we can now add "The Onion Movie", based on the farcical newspaper. The plot, so to speak, looks at anchorperson Norm Archer's (Len Cariou) frustration at his superiors' desire to advertise the release of a Steven Seagal flick than focus on a brewing war. Of course, this is an excuse for a series of outlandish sketches: a singer's pornographic lyrics, a terrorist training video, and "AREA SOCKS FOUND".I was laughing myself sick throughout much of the movie. It's just so hilarious how they throw everything at you out of the blue and just keep it coming. Naturally, you have to accept totally silly humor to like this. Since it apparently did poorly at test screenings, I conclude that the people at those screenings must have lacked senses of humor. This is pretty much the kind of stuff that one finds in "Airplane!" and such flicks. All in all, I think that you'll like this. I sure did, and I recommend it. Also starring Rodney Dangerfield.
