bowmanblue Okay, so zombies and vampires seem to have been done to death lately. We've had romantic vampires, comedy zombies and a hundred hybrids of the two. So, just when we think we've seen every different slant on the undead genre, comes The Revenant. Here, they combine the two, i.e. sentient 'zombies' who don't just groan around the place eating human flesh, but instead, only come to 'life' at night and desire human blood, ala vampires.Amazingly, it works. The Revenant tells the story about an American soldier killed in Iraq. He's shipped back to the States, only to wake up in his coffin as a zombie-vampire (or Revenant, as per the title). After he's suitable freaked out his best friend by coming back from the dead, they set about one self-destructive adventure after the next, picking off local drug dealers to feed their nocturnal blood lust.Although I found everything about the film really good - great acting, believable (and not totally dumb) characters, excellent zombie make-up and gore, I noticed the film is billed as a 'horror comedy.' Well, I get the horror aspect, but didn't find that much to laugh at. Okay, there were a couple of bits that made me chuckle. But then a few lines in Terminator 2 were also there for humour's sake, but I doubt many people consider T2 a comedy.Anyway, bottom line, if you haven't had your fill of the undead yet, try this little gem, it's actually pretty good (plus it's 'cult' enough for you to impress all your friends with a zombie/vampire movie that they probably have never heard of!).
Claudio Carvalho In Basra, Iraq, the American soldier Bart Gregory (David Anders) is ambushed and murdered by the locals. On the night after his funeral, he awakes in his grave and goes to the house of his best friend, the pothead Joey Luebner (Chris Wylde), who does not understand in what Bart has turned into. They unsuccessfully go to a hospital and at dawn, Bart faints and Joey calls his friend, the nurse Mathilda (Jacy King) to help him. They realize that Bart is a revenant, a combination of zombie and vampire, since he needs to drink blood to hold and recover the decomposition of his body. They decide to kill thieves, drug dealers and rapists to get their blood, drugs, weapons and money and they are called Vigilante Gunslingers by the press. One night, Joey is deadly wounded by a criminal and Bart turns him into a revenant. But when Bart's girlfriend Janet (Louise Griffiths) convinces him to turn her into a revenant, the friendship of Joey and Bart is affected. "The Revenant" is an overrated, unpleasant, unfunny and not scary comedy. The movie is too long and the lead characters are unpleasant and gross. Most of the situations are neither funny as a comedy nor scary as horror. The hype around this movie can not be reasonably explained, unless the director has many friends. My vote is four.Title (Brazil): "O Morto Vivo" ("The Living Dead")
Tehmeh Horror comedies are very hard movies to make, probably hardest of them all. If one gets even a slightly positive reaction out of me, it has done something right.I'm not the biggest fan of the genre, but I did like this to an extent. Got in on blu-ray after reading some positive reviews. It started off a little dry, but when things started to happen I found myself enjoying it quite a bit. David Anders was the main reason for that. The "funny" character played by Chris Wylde managed to annoy me more than anything else, but Anders along with some really funny scenes made this movie for me. Sadly, there aren't too much of those really funny scenes. "The Revenant" could've used more of that dark comedy, because it worked whenever the film decided to focus on it. I know it's a tough balance to strike, because you have to be a little serious too for these movies to work. I understand that you can't do it like "Scary Movie" did and at the same time expect a decent film. I understand that you have to have a serious undertone, but sometimes it was too much for me. I'd say that the film was on the right track all the time, but struggled to find the right lane sometimes. There's enough blood to satisfy some people, but I was missing some really insane gore. Perhaps that's just me, but I would've loved to see that in this movie. Sometimes it feels like they held themselves back for some reason.Anyway, even if "The Revenant" didn't blow my mind, it's sympathetic and easy to appreciate. Definitely one of the better horror comedies of late. If I was a fan of the genre, I'd probably give this an 7 out of 10. I would recommend this for a rainy night, easily. Also, if you watch this film, you will never look at a dildo the same way again.
welshtrekker How can those two genres even mix? Gore horror and classic buddy movie action sizzle together. Fallen marine Bart returns home in a coffin, but not for long, much to the surprise of his best friend Joey played by the quite brilliantly unique Chris Wylde. Upon rising from the grave, Bart seeks solace in his buddy who does what he can to aid his dead friend - even if it means bending the rules a bit. When it seems that only human blood can keep Bart from rotting away, Joey takes him to the streets as a vigilante killer and so plenty of warm blood to drain. The movie develops in a way that will hook you to the brilliant end sequence. The performances are world class, and the script razor sharp blending black humor and witty dialogue from start to finish. Zombie movies get an original slant here. This is the very best of the indie movie industry.
