deadparrot4444 The list of people who should be shot, drawn and quartered, then shot again, include the screenwriter(s), the director, the producers, the actors, and I'll even throw in the caterer. Didn't anybody READ the screenplay? The premise is not bad--trapped in a cave-in, the guys eventually decide to eat each other, piecemeal (no pun intended). Right after the cave-in, our lead says, "We have no food and damn little water." Maybe two minutes of screen time later, all our guys are sporting bushy beards (tempus fugit), and one of the other actors says, "They should have found us TWO WEEKS ago." Excuse me? You guys were trapped without food or water (or internet access) for MORE THAN TWO WEEKS(!!!) and the only signs we see of it are you look like refugees from a Gillette commercial? No one seems to have lost weight, no one seems to be DEAD FROM STARVATION. And THEN, they all have the energy to pounce upon the victim and sever his arm? Please. When you start with a gigantic flaw of logic and reality so patently imbecilic, you cannot take anything that follows with the slightest punctillio of even suspended disbelief.
Angela Dean Over all, if you take into account the year it was made, this movie wasn't too bad. I have seen movies much newer that were much, much worse. I mean, it's not nasty gory, or heart-in-your-throat scary, but it has it's moments. There's plotting, a bit of blood, and some hack-and-slash. And as avid a horror movie watcher I am, I STILL didn't see the 'brother' angle coming. The only part I didn't like, was the ending. I mean, they got the last guy, he's locked in a room with a knife. For poetic justice, his options are either cut off his own arm or starve to death. And THAT'S where they end it!! Blasted cliffhangers!! I hate it when movies do that.. It's just...wrong!!
paulgeaf I watched this AFTER reading the reviews and I have to say, most of them are right. This film is badly written, the dialogue is puerile, the acting is at best on a par with a local community theatre production at christmas! It seems a pity that a story such as this, could be a great film. What they have done to it has made it into one of the worst films I have seen for a while. The way they condense so much information into the first half-hour is irritating and from then on it just gets worse! I love the old so bad they're good category but this doesn't even fall into that. This should be in the 'So bad -AVOID' category.
Speechless According to the "alternate versions" listing at this site, there is a heavily edited version of The Severed Arm with most of the gore scenes removed. I think this is the version I saw. Nevertheless, I doubt that any amount of gore could possibly redeem this film. The story might have been interesting, but it falls apart under the burden of terrible acting, dialogue, music, and photography. Even giving the filmmakers the ultra-low-budget benefit of the doubt, this is just a badly made, boring movie.Spoilers follow. It's obvious from the first few times we see her that the daughter character is involved in the killings. But of course the heroes trust her completely and let her know all their plans and leave themselves alone with her many times. And the ending is so stupid it should never even have been scripted. The villain locks a man in a dungeon cell provided with a hunting knife, under the assumption that the prisoner will eventually amputate his own arm for food. No one would EVER do that in that situation! Even if the hero couldn't find any way to escape using the knife, he would probably just use it to kill himself instead of choosing the ridiculous option of cutting off and eating his own arm. It's not a matter of survival-- even if he succeeded in the amputation, his captors would just kill him anyway. Anybody could have written a better ending!
