adonis98-743-186503 A road trip through Louisiana transforms three strangers who were originally brought together by their respective feelings of loneliness. Starring William Hurt, Maria Bello, Kristen Stewart and Eddie Redmayne The Yellow Handkerchief is a movie about redemption and about a man trying to find the woman he loves but also it brings all 3 of them together and they try to fight their loneliness and their life problems and by the end of it Brett goes back to May and a new love starts with Martine and Gordy. I can't really find anything bad about this movie except that is slow paced which is fine honestly for a movie like this and all 4 actors really did a great job especially Hurt, Stewart and Redmayne and if you haven't seen it check it out it deserves your time or even better your money for a rent or buy depending your taste in movies.
alfiecycling The character Brett Hanson has a history that unfolds at first in a series of flashbacks then orally to his two companions, Martine and Gordy. Martine, the daughter of an inter-state truck driver, is a lonely 15 year old girl looking for love and acceptance.Gordy is a lonely white young geeky computer repairman that believes himself to be Native American.Gordy owns a gas guzzling beast of car from the 1970's that transports the three of them towards the unknown in post Katrina, Louisiana. The color palette is predominantly, blues , yellows and their progeny, greens. How the color yellow pops up from time to time was a nice addition to the original story. Here are a few examples: Gordy buys a yellow throwaway camera that is "preferably past its expiration date." Then, at the riverside, slams the camera against the wet rocks before he takes photos of Martine doing a few ballet positions. The resultant photos are unpredictable and look bleached, abstract and surreal. Perhaps a commentary on how he and people in general process and interpret reality differently. During a heavy downpour, Brett borrows Gordy's yellow tent to use as a wrap instead staying in the comforts of the car with his two companions. A yellow fire hydrant causes a lot of grief for Brett and his wife, May. May's hair is dyed yellow.Brett has become the quintessential glass-is-half-empty sort of man that expects to be let down every day. So when he hands his wife, May, a yellow manila envelope I was able to guess its contents. And finally, a yellow handkerchief.A few random memorable quotesGordy: I was kinda apologizing. I was sorta saying, " your life's equal to mine."Brett: No accidents.May: Do you realize you punish those who love you more.Martine: ...I think because I trust sad people.Life handed these four people lemons and they in turn made lemonade. Kudos to everyone involved for making this endearing movie. I enjoyed the musical score...it was quite haunting.
dansview How many times can William Hurt play the depressed ineffectual guy? I loved him in Body Heat and Eyewitness, but these depressed roles are getting old. I don't think he was the right guy for this role. I wasn't buying him as white trash, but I think he did a decent job regardless.I am not a big fan of non-Southern actors trying to fake an accent. Kristen Stewart is supposed to be a local and Hurt is supposed to be from somewhere maybe a bit north of Louisianna, but still in that region I believe. Stewart had to fake and Hurt just put on a very slight accent. These people are losers and outsiders, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The best thing about this movie was the actor playing the boy. I am also not a fan of Brits playing Americans, but he did it well. The fact that I've never seen him made it real for me. I kept picturing the other two in their more famous roles.Maybe it's better to have unknowns in small movies. The reason I stuck with this long, boring film is because I am fascinated by the steaming green foliage and atmosphere of Louisianna. The photography was terrific.I didn't really care about any of these people and there was very little character development/background for the Stewart character, but there is one part where she explains that she embarked on this journey because she wanted to feel cared about. The boy character was an original. I really liked him. He reminded me of the Crispin Glover type from the 80's. He was complex and sensitive and real.Maria Bello is a sexy mature woman. She is actually 17 years younger than Willaim Hurt, but I guess that happens in real life, when both people are past 40. Maybe it would have been more realistic to have this paunchy, pasty bald 58-year-old guy be involved with someone closer to his age. What did the Bello and Stewart characters see in him? Maybe they wanted to take care of him. He had that puppy dog helplessness behind his tough facade. If you don't like character studies and Americana road trips, stay away from this sleeper. But if you have the patience to feel what quirky characters feel, and you appreciate the subtle nuances of the American landscape, give it a chance.
Gary-Oldman i was looking forward to seeing this movie. i went to the video store and rented it only to come home and play it and see that they don't offer any captioning options at all. this is very unfair to those of us who are deaf/hard of hearing and need subtitles. they will loose out on DVD sales. i really wanted to watch this too. it just makes me angry when captions aren't offered on dvds. does anyone know of any copies with captions? in English.looked like a good movie. bummer. thanks for the help.-D. i'll just rent something else.
