MajBlade2 How did they get William Hurt to show up for this? Must have wanted to take a vacation in England and figured get a paycheck for it and never be seen after the first episode. Wanted to like it, came across it after season had ended. Thought, " OK a sword and sorcery show I can binge watch" I eeked through the first episode, played a lot of world of warcraft while second episode was playing and by third I had turned to the world news since I was depressed by then.So many plot holes Hillary could hide a whole server in them. And the dialogue was as bad as a Trump speech.CGI was hit or miss. By that some low rent IT guy was hitting and missing wtih his codingAs soon as the intro played I thought I somehow had switched HBO on. The introduction was basically a cheaper carbon copy of GOT THATS why so many reviewers bring it upNo blood and guts, no Boobies or Wangs, I would have expected this series on American SYFY channel 10 years ago (they do much better now)Then I saw it was made in England. I thought they meant New Zealand and had just used the cast of Hercules (20 years older)Then saw same channel as that god awful Atlantis and understoodIt was never meant to be GOT and boy did they go out of their way to make sure no one would ever think it was
Jay B Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands is exactly what is was designed to be - a really entertaining, well made family action adventure. As many other reviewers have said this series has been unfairly compared with GOT but clearly it was never intended to sit within this bracket. Where GOT is clearly an adult fantasy drama, Beowulf is aimed at families hence its 7pm Sunday time-slot. Its better compared with BBC's Merlin or ITV's Robin of Sherwood from the 80's. A clever reworking of the epic tale this version of Beowulf is well cast, with some great performances & has strong plot lines which build throughout the series. It also manages to combine some genuine character development with a large dose of adventure. If you've been put off by some of the worse reviews I'd suggest giving it a proper go - by episode 4 it really begins to gain ground and builds to become a really enjoyable, genuinely entertaining family show. Hope to see a 2nd series.
championph About time a good show was available for family viewing. Great work ITV MORE!!!!! I found the CGI really good and my son loved the trolls. I would like to see more fantasy on TV that is toward family viewing. Great actors and humorous at right times. Great set in county durham the bleak landscape gives a haunting feel. The first episode was hard to follow but by the third all good. MAkes you want to want the next straight away. Costomes and the extras make it very enjoyable viewing.More. Looking forward to see how the characters develop over time. I would love to see this develop into a further series like game of thrones. I understand this is family viewing but more please ITV best thing ever
dhdb001 Most of the criticism I've seen of this series either relates to the CGI creatures or that it is unrealistic and compares badly to Game of Thrones and Vikings. This is not comparing like for like. The series is obviously intended as a family show, with appeal to younger viewers, reflected by it's 7pm time slot. Better comparisons would be to shows like Primeval, which relied on CGI creatures, or The Three Musketeers and Merlin, which took well known works and expanded the story in new directions. Three episodes in the series is coming to life. It almost has the feel of the Wild West, with Herot as a frontier town and Beowulf becoming a character rather like a town sheriff. There are several strong female characters and much centres around Rheda and her attempts to retain power, while different factions plot to undermine her. Looking forward to seeing where the story goes and how other elements of the original poem will be woven into the plot. I hope it plays well with it's intended audience, maybe a Saturday evening slot would have worked better, capturing viewers with Dr Who withdrawal symptoms.
