Niaz Islam Arif I was totally fooled by the rating, I genuinely don't get how this film have such a high rating. I have watched many teenager movies but none of them failed to portrait the teenager life as badly as this movie. The script was ridiculous, as a result the screenplay turned to be a complete disaster. There was no character build ups, no strong background story. Things were simply happening without much context.Hand-held camera or hand-held shooting is an art. What the cameramen did in this film is simply shaky camera work there was nothing artsy about it. Frankly the camera work bothered me a lot. Lastly the acting seemed very amateur to me. Authentic acting is one thing but it was pure amateur work altogether. I could not find any single aspect of this film that I might like. Not worth your time.NOT RECOMMENDED.
bowmanblue Thirteen is the story of two (you guessed it) thirteen year old girls, growing up in Los Angeles. One (Tracey) is growing up 'the right way,' i.e. she studies hard and is generally nice, whereas the other (Evie) is too mature for her own good, engaging in all sorts of illegal vices. However, she's also thought of as both 'popular' and 'cool.' Therefore Tracey is drawn into her world and things start to spiral out of control from there. You can probably guess what out of control thirteen year old girls get up to when they're left to their own devices, so I won't dwell on that. Instead, I'll mention some of the criticism the film got, namely that too much happens too quickly. That may be true. In real life perhaps all these tragic events wouldn't happen all at once and to only one person (think 'Kidulthood'), but this is a story after all and it would probably be a lot less interesting if the worst thing that happened to Tracey was that her god ate her homework. Secondly, people have said it exploits the underage female actresses. They may have a point on that one, but then so to the filmmakers, who aren't afraid of shying away from what kids actually get up to.Thirteen is pretty hard-hitting. It's one of those films that's about kids, but you certainly wouldn't want to let your kids watch. If it teaches us one depressing lesson, it's that people who appear nice are usually not. I found this the most realistic part of the whole film. Evie is - on the surface - lovely. She's polite to adults, always has the right answer for everything and isn't afraid at lying and dropping someone else in the brown stuff to cover her own despicable actions. Unfortunately, I have met a fair few people like that in life. They're poison and they need pointing out so others don't fall for their act.Don't expect all sweetness and hugs from these girls. It's pretty powerful stuff and you have to be in the right mood to watch a film like this.I'm just glad I was playing on my Megadrive at thirteen and not on the streets of L.A.
hawktwo In real life, I watched as 3 beautiful girls turned into these awful adolescents in real life. It was horrifying to see some of their own escapades on the screen. The heartbreak was real and Holly Hunter had it spot on. The reality of living with an out of control teen is so realistically shown. You give up your own life to try to desperately help someone you love with all your heart. Tough Love doesn't work when someone doesn't care.By the time I saw this movie, the teens I knew were 20. The horrors they inflicted did not end at age 14 as it did in the movie. It ended for one of them at age 16 when she experienced a brain injury from a car accident driving while under the influence; the second one's ended at age 21 when she suffered a heart attack-stroke combination, thus leaving her baby to a father who liked to punch. The third shaped up.I don't know if the author was like this at age 13, but I do know she nailed the reality of life for some 13 year olds. She nailed the helplessness of the parent. It's a movie worth watching even if you don't have teens of your own.
Avid Climber Thirteen is a teenage nightmare where parents get lost and where a life can be easily consumed. The good. An incredibly dramatic rendition of things going out of control. A simple story, mesmerizing by its truthful reflection of reality. Perfect acting. Powerful scenes. Dialogs that are so well built they could escape the lips of any parent or teen. The actors. Stellar performance by everyone. I'll just mention the main characters. Evan Rachel Wood as our main girl. Nikki Reed as her best friend. Holly Hunter as her mother. The bad. Nothing. The ugly. Nothing. The result. A troubling film that should be watched by everyone, but beware the drama, be ready for it.
