Leofwine_draca WASABI is a difficult film to describe. It's like a comedy version of LEON, but then it's not. It's a French film, but most of it is set in Japan and it's about the Japanese. It has action, but it's not an action film. I guess this would best be described as a quirky comedy. I usually hate comedies, but I loved this one, so that's saying something. The biggest draw is the presence of Jean Reno playing a tough, sentimental cop. The role seems to have been written for him, because it fits him like a glove, and he's absolutely superb. His comic timing is impeccable and the way he underplays the humour could teach the likes of Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers a thing or two.In the film, Reno is forced to hang around with a Japanese girl, played by the equally excellent Ryoko Hirosue. This unlikely collaboration is the subject of plenty of laughs as we witness Reno forced to go shopping and hang out at an arcade, where he has a go on a dance mat (for me, the film's highlight). There are some Japanese Yakuza thrown in too, but the action scenes are played for laughs rather than thrills; we witness Reno taking them out in a clothing store and using a golf club to cause some serious pain. Reno is effortlessly cool throughout this, and Michel Muller, as his comic foil, is also surprisingly funny. Things end with a big bank heist climax, which isn't perfect but still fun.In essence, this is what happens when a good script is paired with fine actors. The laughs are genuine rather than forced, and even the more surreal touches – like Reno's opponents flying through the air when he punches them – work without becoming irritating. I rate this one highly.
playtoyer this is a great movie.A good mix of comedy and action. This movie has a little of everything to have a great time. The association between those 2 actors is great, the story is very modern and translated in a lot of emotions. The movie talks about the relations between a father and his daughter.jean reno is a great actor every scene with him is a deligh. This movie is perfect to have a good it has a little of everything action comedy emotive moments, they should make more of those movies because they are fun movies.this is a great comedy that everybody can enjoy.jean reno is amazing is such a great actor and in this movie he is very funny.
Bozo This movie reminds me a lot of movies like Shoot Em Up and The matrix combined...except in French.Wasabi follows the story of Hubert Fiorentini, a French cop who travels to Japan for his former lover, Miko's, cremation, only to learn that her daughter, Yumi, is also his. However, when he also learns of the vast fortune that Miko left Yumi, he knows he must protect Yumi from some bad people that Miko got mixed up with and ended up losing her life to.First off, the comedy/action mix in Wasabi is extraordinary. The comedy is not over-the-top ridiculously stupid like in Scary Movie 4. It goes well with the action and adds to it, making it interesting. The acting is excellent, particularly Jean Reno as Hubert Fiorentini, the by-the-book, witty, skilled cop. We also have a funny performance by Michel Muller, as Hubert's moronic, hard-working, laid back partner Momo. Ryoko Hirosue was also great as Yumi, the hyper, preppy, fun-loving, happy-go-lucky daughter of Hubert. There are a lot of good Matrix-style action scenes here, all well-done and not overly ridiculous. The story was very well written and executed.Over all, Wasabi is a great movie for action fans. Fans of The matrix and Shoot Em Up will not want to miss this one. 9/10.
Gordon-11 This film is about a French man suddenly finding himself having a rebellious Japanese daughter.I thoroughly enjoyed the film. The plot is fun and dynamic, it mixes humour, mystery and action all in a film. The soundtrack is great, the music is upbeat, which enhances the youthful and fun atmosphere of the film. Japanese culture is portrayed in the film. It is in fact quite comprehensive in its portrayal of tradition and culture. It shows traditional culture like food, Japanese architecture and ninjas. It also shows modern culture like the cute girls dyeing their hair brown or blonde, clubs, and various video game arcades. Ryoko Hirosue gives a fine performance as a teenage girl, and speaks convincing French. I really enjoyed this film, it is so funny!
