hongkong666 Originally realesed under the title Within, The Cavern is a perfect example of how to fail as a Cave Horror movie. The plot is, once more, just the same old repeat as we got used to as these kind of movies surfaced. A group of cavers want to go into a cave, peferably unexplored, simply because... well, why not, right? For more than 90 minutes the audience has every right to feel offended. The acting does not convince at all, the lighting may be close to reality but doesn't work for a movie like this, pretty much every dialogue is useless and then we also have these edless orgies of shaky cam madness. And I get it. It has to be in there to hide almost everything, because this 150,000$ budget atrocity had no savings left for any kind of intelligent writing nor at least a few decent visual effects. Plus the ending is a total rip off of one specific scene in The Hills Have Eyes. This is so bad, that it never should have been made!
Quebec_Dragon In the sub-genre of horror films set in underground settings (ex. The Descent), if this is not the worst, then it's close to it. 8 people (including 2 women) decide to explore an unknown cavern in Russia, someone dies, they get stuck inside, and then things get worse. I didn't mind that the story was simple, I didn't mind so much that the characters were woefully underdeveloped (except perhaps the black guy), but I did mind several other things. First and foremost, there was some truly obnoxious camera work, as in very shaky and put at weird angles for the sake of being original. A chaotic uncontrolled camera supposed to show confusion and/or tension failed miserably, in part because of the atrocious editing and frenetic cuts. Whenever some action occurred, it seemed to me that the "creators" were basically hiding, cheaply, what was happening by combining one or more of the following: mad shaking, constant perspective change, black image and/or strobing pictures lasting a fraction of a second. You'll get several darkness moments that rely on screams and sound effects for scares. Those moments become tiresome, don't scare due to underwhelming sound and feel like a cheap way to fill up screen time in an already short movie. When it's not dark, your vision gets disturbed by the lights on the characters aimed straight at the camera or lens flares. Bad sound mixing sometimes hinders comprehension. It's a shaky cam venture kind of like the Blair Witch Project, but there was no logical reason for it. Even for artistic reasons, it was done horribly. Special effects were virtually non-existent, except for one pretty gory early body, and the creature was hidden until the very end. You'd think that was conducive to suspense and mystery, but not really. If I had paid money for this film, I would have felt cheated.Rating: 2 out of 10 (terrible)
Annabelle_Lee If one could partition the stars on IMDb, I would have given this movie 0.01! Among all the "innovative" movies of this genre this is about the worst I have seen. Imagine 'Blair witch project' crossed with 'Quarantine', but with no zombies, no nothing. All the movie a bunch of "bright" young men and women are running around some cave screaming and cursing, trying to learn some Russian(!) in a process, while something is hunting them down one by one. That's about it... The overall impression I got is that somebody ripped off one of "South Park" episodes, but took it "for real". :)But more seriously now, the whole plot is that a jungle-book Mowgli rip off that survived a plane-crash, lived from age 10-11 in a cave in the desert, with almost no source of food, for a dozen years, only to wait for a group of explorers to stumble upon his cave so he can kill them off one by one, and rape the women? Very original. He gets shot several times, but the animal skins on him save him? Really? Where can I buy one of those bear skins? I have stumbled upon this movie in a rental shop, and decided to watch it because it was fairly new and I'd never heard of it before. Now I know why... If you want a really good movie of this type, watch 'The Ruins'.
rixrex Good thing I only paid $1 for this at the Big Lots! What a rotten example of a cave movie, or perhaps it could be said, a good example of how to NOT do a cave movie. The comment from the spelunker notwithstanding, the fact is that a MOVIE about a CAVE has to have more than the glare of lamps in our face to be appreciated. There has to be a minimal amount of back-lighting in order for us to see the activity. Not only did this trash have no back-lighting at all, it barely had any lighting upon the subjects and too often they were shot in close-up even during action scenes, leaving me to speculate as to what actually happened. While this technique is useful in keeping the hideous beast hidden from view, to use it for nearly all scenes is just ridiculous. Those who wish to see a cave as it would actually appear to an explorer, you only need to go into one yourselves. That's reality, but this was supposed to be a movie that could be watched and understood. It wasn't.Do yourself a favor and stick to The Cave and Descent for some good underground thrills.
