Reviews

Dave This Channel 4 sitcom is about three Roman Catholic priests who live in a house on a remote Irish island that's populated by eccentric people. The interactions between them, and the other characters, are very funny. There are three series, which were broadcast from 1995-1998. More would have been made, had Dermot Morgan (who played Ted) not died in 1998.
Bert45 I'm a huge fan of Father Ted and most of the praise I would give this anarchic, wildly inventive comedy has already been written by other reviewers. But recently, I was struck by the show's great similarity to an old popular BBC sitcom of the late 1960s called All Gas And Gaiters. The main difference was that AGAG was set in an Anglican country parish, but all the same elements are there: A senior priest in the vicarage, a doddery old bishop who likes his drink too much and a young, naïve and accident-prone novice priest. Also, there is the ever-present and domineering Dean who tries to keep the trio in line. Could it be that the writers of Father Ted were simply updating this old English comedy for a modern and more open-minded audience? If so, they did a wonderful job of it, as Father Ted is a classic.
eflaat This was a great show that I've sadly only recently seen. It has a great ensemble and that nugget of pure wit and charm that many shows these days lack. From the off the wall antics and stupidity of Dougal to the drunken screed of "drink" from Father Hackett this show has the feel of something comedically simple but wonderful. I've seen plenty of shows and movies made after the show that borrow from it heavily. I'm sure somewhere that Seth McFarlane was scribbling heavily when he saw the outlandish non-sequiturs and smash-cuts to new locations for the sake of a bit. If you like classic sitcoms then this is a spicy bit you need from the scores of lackluster examples of both yesterday and today.
XRoads ... It's so much better. I've been looking for so long but nothing seems to come close to the brilliance of Father Ted.The jokes come thick and fast but are so deep that even the distant memories of them can make you cry with laughter. I don't believe anything will ever be made that is as perfect as this.Unlike most other comedy series, the jokes get better the more watch them and familiarise yourself with all the characters. Most of which have something to do with religion, but in the general sense of the characters and playing on stereotypes rather than being either for or against religion itself. It's such a tragedy that Dermot Morgan (Father Ted) died. This series gave so much laughter to many and in my opinion; it just kept getting better and better as the characters developed. So don't miss out on watching this rare TV treasure.. 'Go on, go on, go on...!'
