MaximumMadness SyFy's Paranormal Investigation reality series "Ghost Hunters" has, for the past 8 years, terrified and absorbed audiences in many ways. Following TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society), a paranormal enthusiast and investigation group headed by Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, the series follows the two and their team (although team members have changed, and Grant recently left the show for personal reasons) as they stake out and investigate various reportedly-haunted locations. The series follows a basic formula. The team heads to a reportedly-haunted location (or a location where some possible paranormal activity has been reported at very least) and they are taken on a tour, where they are informed of the events that have transpired. Then, the team does an overnight investigation (or a multi-night investigation in some cases), using equipment such as cameras, digital thermometers, EMP meters, audio recorders, etc. to try and measure any changes in the environment or find any photographic or audio evidence. Afterwords, the evidence is combed through and the team presents them to the home-owners, or whomever summoned them. The series has a lot of strengths. For starters, it isn't patronizing or high-and-mighty. It is a show aimed at believers in the paranormal and treats the subject matter with respect. The team are compelling to watch and provide a lot of built-in drama for the series as we get to know them over time. The show is also atmospheric and eerie to watch thanks to the creative camera-work and editing the camera crew following TAPS provides. And occasionally, the team will find some rather compelling evidence of the paranormal, which is always exciting and interesting. However, there are also some problems with the series. For starters, a lot of the investigations go nowhere. Also, a problem with a lot of paranormal-themed shows are guilty of this, but a lot of the science presented is really pseudo-science and based on conjecture, as paranormal activity cannot be accurately defined or tested by modern science, so some things must be taken with a grain of salt. Also, at times the show focuses too much on the cast, and in the most recent season, this has been a detriment. (Although this seems to be padding for when investigations go nowhere.)That being said, this is still one of the more compelling paranormal theme reality/documentary series on TV right now. For believers, this is a must-see. I give it a strong 8 out of 10.
WandrinStar Season One 82/100- Way better than I thought the show would be, at least after the original ten episodes. Although I've heard complaints that the later seasons might be faked or staged, I got none of the feelings in the first season. I love TAPS approach of trying to debunk hauntings rather than try and prove them. This gives the show credibility that is often lacking in this line of work. In fact, over half of the location TAPS visits found no evidence or was deemed not haunted.Even those who don't like the show have to appreciate the concept of two plumbers who become paranormal investigators by night. The show is grounded, and you really see both Jason and Grant doing there best to collect evidence with a small budget that limits their headquarters to a trailer and limits their traveling (the farthest west they went from their home in Warwick, RI was Pittsburgh). The show really does work as a docu-reality show as well as a ghost hunt. The supporting team players for TAPS are numerous and interchangeable. The only other members that appear regularly and have a defined personality are Brian and Steve and to a lesser extent Donna and Andy. Brian in particular has been developed as the whipping boy of the show which both helps and hurts the show, although often there's reason to back up his bullying.Appreciate the team throwing out useless evidence such as orbs, but would have liked to see them go further into the history of the buildings they are investigating while showing previous evidence at that location. Considering Jason and Grant are lead investigators, I want to see them having a bigger part collecting evidence during the cases. Major evidence TAPS collected were EVPs in the Altoona and Albany, the moving chair at New London's Race Rock Lighthouse, the cloaked figure stalking Philadelphia's Eastern State Penitentiary, and the cameraman attacked at the armory in New Bedford by an unknown entity.
Blade I'll admit that when I first started watching this show, at a friend's request of course, I thought it was vaguely interesting. I've always loved paranormal things, and figured a show called "Ghost Hunters" could fill my insatiable need to understand such things.Unfortunately that was not the case. Gradually I became more and more annoyed at this show and their methods. Mainly I have a few issues with how they handle things. First, some of their members don't seem to respect the ghosts, or spirits if you will. I recall there was an episode in which one of the members was trying to provoke the ghost into doing something by calling it names. Careful doing that, newbie, you might just get possessed.Another issue I had is that they rely on technology for EVERYTHING. They'll set up thousands of dollar's worth of cameras and other equipment around the place in hopes that they'll catch something. This may be scientifically proved to catch things that we have scientific proof of, but when you're trying to catch PARANORMAL things with EVERY DAY technology, you've got to know that you're going to get little to nothing. At least Paranormal State has the balls to use psychics, mediums, and religious methods, which are far superior to technology.Last issue is my main problem. They're rarely willing to draw a conclusion about a whole lot of ANYTHING. They use their "scientific method" to try to rule out regular happenings before they can draw a conclusion, but even when they do rule out everything else, they STILL aren't willing to admit it's paranormal. For example, if they had a camera get knocked over or something, they would test for ground movement, wind, drafts in the house, physical intervention, etc etc, but even when they rule that nothing normal could've possibly effected it, they only rule that it could POSSIBLY be paranormal, and that's being generous. Get my drift? If science can't explain it, then obviously it must be PARA - NORMAL.And whenever they DO find something they deem to be "paranormal", they don't do anything about it! I can't tell you how many times they've heard EVP's saying "help" or "help me", but they never do! They log it as just another phenomenon. Has it occurred to them that these spirits actually want help passing on, and this is their only way of asking for it? Nope, they wouldn't know. It's all about ratings and money.Ultimately I don't like how they go about doing things on this show, and I believe that ultimately their methods are causing them more trouble than it's worth. I'll stick with Paranormal State, thanks.
