Reviews

escctrlshift Based on what I've seen so far, up through episode 5, this is a fairly classy act. Being neither a mountaineer nor a student of Hillary's life -- indeed, I am student of South Asian culture and count many friends in the greater NYC Sherpa community, in which I am something of a happenstance celebrity -- I can't rate the series based on any sense of verisimilitude as far as Hilary and New Zealand are concerned. But I can rate it reasonably well based on its depiction of native Nepalese -- only I wish for more. And a better exploration of Tenzin Norgay whom I suspect, in real life, is a more charismatic person than the character shown here. (Certainly the importance of Sherpa Tenzin to the Sherpa community in Nepal can scarcely be overstated, nor that of Hillary's for that matter.) But at least "Ed"'s character is well-developed. The writing and direction leave a lot unstated, which clearly marks this as a "foreign" series, that is, for us American viewers. There is no slick production, after-effects or CGI beyond a necessary minimum. No portentous soundtrack gimmicks either. It's good solid family entertainment, nice enough to recommend to me Mum!
