This show was often serious, though it was structured like a sitcom and fits better into that tradition. That's not to say it wasn't funny too, but it dealt more realistically with the goings-on in the Oval Office than farces like "Hail to the Chief." George C. Scott was a great actor, and he did fine here. The tone of the show would've been a delicate matter in any situation, but it especially didn't fit with Fox in its early years. Perhaps it might have worked better on CBS.
