EP1 Pilot Oct 21, 2010

A pilot episode for an American version (known as Red Dwarf USA) was produced through Universal Studios with the intention of broadcasting on NBC in 1992.The show essentially followed the same story as first episode of the original series, using American actors for most of the main roles: Craig Bierko as Lister, Chris Eigeman as Rimmer, and Hinton Battle as Cat. Exceptions to this were Llewellyn, who reprised his role as Kryten, and the British actress Jane Leeves who played Holly. It was written by Linwood Boomer and directed by Jeffrey Melman with Grant and Naylor onboard as creators and executive producers.

Jim Sadur This version of Red Dwarf is strictly a worthless footnote. The script is almost completely cribbed from the original British episode "The End" with a poorer cast, flat performances and nothing original to speak of.It is astonishing that Someone thought it useful to Americanize what was already a classic comedy on both sides of the Atlantic. That Someone must think all Americans are parochial morons who would be alienated by the original. This is yet another failed attempt to de-Anglicize a British hit. At least this version died before being officially aired.
averil_white This has to be one of the worst adaptations of any program I have ever seen. The acting is wooden, there's no spark between the characters, and the jokes are purely recycled. The pilot episode takes jokes from across the range of the BBC series, and tries to compress them into one episode, failing miserably. The actors who play Lister, Rimmer and the Cat try hard, but they just cannot achieve the same level that the original actors had. Kryten looks purely uncomfortable acting with them, and the whole cast lack the camaraderie that the original crew have.If you're new to Red Dwarf, watch the original. If you're a die-hard fan, don't even bother with this version.
Jizzlobber They took a great comedy and with one go the completely wrecked, and guess how? They dumbed down the jokes. I have read in many places that British films have there names changed frequently for american release and apparently many americans dont "get" the british sense of humour. maybe its just because i know the original characters so well but these new ones do not give the characters justice. If you are a fan of the original series STEER CLEAR.
Daniel_Of_Smeg This is without a doubt the worst adaptation ever. Im sorry but british comedy is only funny when its *British*. The American humour aint at all funny and the characters are weak to say the least. The only good point about this show is Kryten......only because its the original. An absolutely terrible tv show, if you like Red Dwarf then watch the original.
