harrsha-59296 I stumbled upon this series by accident while surfing Amazon Prime and started watching it after looking up the star cast and ratings on IMDB. But it was nothing quite like I expected and I ended up binge-watching the entire 2 seasons in 48 hours! This is probably the best thiller series I've seen in a long time. Here's the plot: Bizzare circumstances bring together a broke Stanford dropout computer genius of Cuban origin (Otmara Marrero), a Haitian gang leader (Edi Gathegi) from Little Haiti, and banker son of a money launderer (Adam Brody) to begin their own ''Startup" with a glorious and noble vision to enrich their lives while also changing the lives of people across the world. But what follows is a nail-biting ride of highs and lows perpetrated by rival Haitian gang members, a corrupt FBI agent (Martin Freeman), back-stabbing VC funders, and the Russian mafia. Apart from an intricate plot that has its share of very upsetting tragedies, what works superbly for this series is its realistic pace. Unlike most series that create messed up situations for the thrill, but very quickly sort them out to relax the audience's nerves and portray the heroes as infallible, this one takes its time. Till the end of season two, it looks as if things might not quite work out for the entrepreneurs. Phitigraphy showing Miami waterfronts are lovely and beautifully contrast the dark annals of gang turfs and drug havens that coexist in the city. The Keys were mind-blowing but I also fell in love with the colourful Haitian neighborhood. It's a superb star cast that stays true to its characters and made me love them till the very end. The roles of Ronald Dacey and Nick Tallman are perfect for Edi Gathegi and Adam Brody. Martin Freeman, as always, does not fail to impress, although he is not as prominent in the series. I hope there is a season 3, because somethings still seem unclear/unsolved. If there is, I'll be the first to watch it.
dangunnarsson-14421 First I want to say I understand why people like this show so much. It has it great moments. Building up tension, an unpredictable plot, good acting and a ok script. I was hooked by the first episodes. But then the interest faded. It was just something that didn't kept me hooked and in the end I had to struggle to make it trough the whole season 2. But at first I couldn't put my finger on what it was that I disliked. But the more I looked the more I realized different elements that bugged me. The pace is quite uneven and usually I like it when series or movies move slow and building character development, but in Startup it just annoyed me because sometimes it's just downright lousy character development that dosen't make you feel any more about the characters, it's just boring. In the end the only one I cared about was Ronald, Edi Gathegi does a marvelous job brining life to his character and I am really looking forward to see more of him. The plot is quite good and I was often exclaiming "oh did that just happened". But as the show progresses those moments gets fewer. The last thing that bugged me was all the sex scenes which just seemed unnecessary in a lot of cases and didn't bring anything to the plot. All in all it was a good show definitely worth seeing. Pros: good acting, interesting plot, great cinematography Cons: a lot of boring scenes, not so good character development and a lot of gratuitous sex scenes.I will begin to watch the third season but if it is more of the same Startup is going to have one less viewer.
Phylum22 Loved the first season, the characters are all great and all so different. The storyline was new and fresh, with all sorts of emotional ups and downs. The real reason for watching at the beginning was the delicious Adam Brody. But all that aside, the eagerly awaited second season came. And it looks it is to be a rerun of the first. Which I am so disappointed about.
jonasmail-87932 If you like Billions, Ozark and Silicon Valley you will most likely love this one. For some reason this series is very little promoted and it seem like lots of people doesn't know about it (I stumbled on it). Well, I guess its because its not a Netflix or HBO production...Watch it!
