EP1 Episode 1 Oct 07, 2008

Bob (Bing) Crosby is one of the most likeable people around. His natural wit and optimism are infectious to those around him. The only negative trait in Bing's life is his inability to resist gambling a few quid on the occasional bet. Bernadette, his childhood sweetheart and mother of their son, Joe, loves Bing for the person she's known all her life and although she doesn't approve of, and is often infuriated by, his casual betting, she always reluctantly forgives him. Bing's Dad George knows that he shares a special bond with his grandson Joe and even though Joe is too young to realise this, he certainly feels it in his heart. But, when Bing's gambling develops into something more serious than the occasional bet and the risks he takes become greater, it's no longer just a few quid that Bing stands to lose – potentially, it's everything.

EP2 Episode 2 Oct 14, 2008

Bernadette can't take Bing's gambling any more and throws him out. Bing takes refuge at dad George's house. Bing has always managed to win Bernadette's forgiveness and although he knows it's going to be tougher this time, he still expects to do so. However, when it becomes clear that she has no intention of doing so this time and makes new plans for a life without him, his gambling spirals out of control. Grandad George tries to help Joe come to terms with the situation and console him about the reasons for his father's behaviour. Meanwhile, George has issues of his own to deal with. Finally, even he can no longer justify or tolerate Bing's behaviour.

EP3 Episode 3 Oct 21, 2008

Bing takes his first tentative steps as he attempts to overcome his gambling addiction. George's own problems appear to be getting worse but he keeps them to himself for fear of disrupting Bing's progress. Bernadette begins to settle into her new life without Bing and is flattered by the attentions of an admirer. Bing's endeavours to woo Bernadette back fall on deaf ears and he starts to question whether his attempts at recovery are worthwhile, in the absence of a possible reconciliation with her. George reassures Bing that he owes it to himself and his son Joe to continue. Encouraged by his Dad, Bing's recovery continues to grow from strength-to-strength and his relationship with Joe reaches a new level.

john peters This is a very moving drama/ comedy which was well put together for maximum effect. This is a classic example of Craig and Phil's amazing writing and directing skill. Lets hope the BBC allow them to produce more fantastic programs in the future. 4 Million Viewers! WOW! This standard of writing matches up to the Royle Family, another superb sitcom. The cast were great, especially young Joe, what an amazing actor. The story begins with the gambling addiction of Bing, played by Coogan, which shows a true reflection of the habits of some members of the society in which we live today. We learn about the strong relationship between Joe and his grandpa, played by Hill. The drama contains the themes of comedy, drama, love and tragedy. The drama closes with the death of George (Hill). This program is cleverly written as one minute you are rolling around on the floor in hysterics and the next you need a box of tissues. Fantastic! BAFFilms08
LfcMotd73 I can't believe this had 4m viewers and nobody's come on to write something on here about it. Oh well, I'm the very first and I'm glad. This comic drama from Craig Cash and Phil Mealy was brilliant and I wish it had been a longer series. BBC do make good TV once in a while and this is definitely high up on the list. Bernard Hill and Steve Coogan are particularly brilliant in this but I really loved the kid playing little Joe. What a lovely little actor.# The chemistry between the boy and Bernard Hill playing his granddad was brilliant and lovely. And Coogan surprised me nicely with a very good dramatic performance. I love Coogan's comedy stuff- he's a legend but here he is really giving an acting turn. Sunshine has really stand out funny moments but it's really about the relationship between the 3 generations of Crosby men- George (Hill), Bing (Coogan) and Joe (young Dominic). It was so lovely to watch the relationship with George and his grandson and the chemistry was wonderful. It was incredibly moving towards the end. We knew it was leading up to sadness- I just felt it in my stomach it was going to be sad but I was surprised how moving it was. I was filling up with tears. It really was sad and so brilliantly performed. Lisa Millet deserves mention here too. I found she was so good in the role of Coogan's girlfriend and was a lovely, warm performance. The whole cast are good. Daniel Ryan, Craig Cash, Phil Mealey. This drama showed us about family love and the bonds between fathers and sons and never giving up and loss. Funny, heartbreaking and brilliant.
