Unlike many shows - including Supernatural - there's an actual story, backplot and development here right from the start. Yes, there are a mixture of themes, including Victoriana / verging on Steam Punk, elements of Warehouse 13 and nods in various directions. For me that adds to the establishment of authenticity, which is carried over in the writing. Far from being bad acting / narrative (see the early episodes of Mortal Instruments and Shanara - both of which were pretty terrible), there is a slant on this that, if allowed to develop could easily mature in to a clever, witty and developed set of stories. For the most part the acting and direction are great - if a little different from the 'norm'.In some ways it reminds me of good tv programmes from the 60's and 70's, where time and effort had to be put into the narrative simply because of technical limitations.Of course, if the unimaginative can't grasp the theatricality of it, then I don't suppose it will get renewed, which would be a real shame, as with the right writing and a bit of enthusiasm on the part of the channel, it could become very interesting. But what do I know, I stuck with it and enjoyed it and would be very happy for more.

The first episode was awkward in its flow, but once you get past that its actually a really captivating show. I'll admit that at times the production is different, which although it kind of catches you off guard, becomes one of the more endearing elements of the show. The characters are all pretty interesting and some are surprisingly well acted. The show kind of makes me think of a more freeform/less mainstream procedural version of grimm. Anyway, I encourage viewers to wade through the first episode and get to the more captivating parts.
