paint9698 Utterly unfunny...I mean honestly is there any truth in a sex crazed, chocaholic vicar who has nothing but disrespect for what she's supposed to be ACTUALLY doing. I found the whole thing cynical, unconvincing and treating country folk like they're nothing but morons. Very ugly, nasty even...But to top it off it's poorly written, Dawn French can make nothing of what are supposed to be witty one liners. It's the sort of sitcom where after every line you go UGGGGGGHHHHH... The rest of the cast are no better, the town millionaire, his idiot son and his comatose daughter-in-law try to act as merrily idiotic as is humanly IMPOSSIBLE. And that doesn;t even mention the half witted farmer and the slutty old lady...all supposedly hilarious. Truly abysmal television
pinkhaa478 I know a lot of people loved this show as it was ranked in the top three of all British comedy shows, however to me the show lacks any substance and the characters are all pale stereotypes from the seventies. Now the premise for the show isn't bad, a liberal woman coming to a backwoods village as the new minister to the shock and disgust of the people of the town could be funny and for some of the early episodes it wasn't terrible. However as a series it went long enough and after two series it really was enough, hell one would have been okay. The major problem though is they make Dawn French too strong and surround her with weak characters who aren't interesting who go from being just boring too being way too eccentric and lacks all meaning. Also they all are bad caricatures and utterly clique that I just role my eyes whenever I tried to watch this show. Also I fail to see what this show is even trying to say are they trying to mock the Church of England for being backwards and not able to change or are they just mocking people who live in small English towns as being near retarded and unable to function in any way shape or form. Or is it that really the show is saying that all though Vicar Granger for her liberal, modern values is just as dumb as the townspeople, either way it doesn't carry my attention and doesn't deserve the acclaim it gets.
Kirt Beckett I suppose all good things and all that but I for one will be sorry to see it go. The finale sees Dibley's Vicar, Geraldine, meet the man of her dreams and get married. Some excellent performances and brilliant farcical moments meant that by the end my sides were hurting from laughing. As ending go this was one of the better ones (some show let themselves down on the final episode). The Vicar of Dibley has to go down in history as one of this country's finest and funniest sit coms ever. It has all the making of a classic and will join Fawlty Towers, Only Fools & Horses etc as an all time great.
MartinHafer This is sort of an Anglican version of FATHER TED--another favorite BBC comedy series. However, unlike TED, where the priests are THE dumb ones on the show, with the VICAR OF DIBLEY, Dawn French plays a sane reverend among a village of total idiots. The only exception is David, who is NOT a complete moron--instead he's pretty much a selfish stick in the mud. Each episode features the most amazingly dumb dialog by the cast of regulars--and they are so dumb you often laugh out loud and yet, in a strange way, you really grow to like them. All the original episodes are great, though I have to admit the quality dropped a bit when they had a few additional episodes years later--the newer ones tended to be pretty maudlin and everyone seemed to spend too much time remembering and not enough time just being their stupid selves.Excellent writing, acting and direction make this a great series and among the best from BBC.
