Synopsis

Frequent flooding and drowning were common occurrences in Tianjin (Tientsin) in the early 1900s. But when a local shipping magnate was found drowned to death chained to a statue on the bottom of riverbed, police department's underwater recovery team captain Guo De You was their primary suspect, since he was the only one in the city who could stay underwater long enough to complete the deed. The businessman son's Ding Mao tried to prove Guo's guilt, but his own forensic discovery and another bizarre drowning in the same vicinity challenged his initial impression. Together with spirit medium Gu Ying and news reporter Xiao Lan Lan, they peeled away the mystery and found the clues pointed to an incident occurred over 20 years ago when an evil cult was ravaging the city. Now, the cult was once again causing havoc. To stop their resurgence, the team must investigate the unexplained, mind-bending cases that plagued their city.

Reviews

jolayz I grown up in Tientsin but left there from 18 years old until now. In my memory, Tientsin is a mixing of Chinese traditional, Western culture as Concession, humorous citizen, Mysticism, food and the river. All the place in this TV show was so familiar, the river, the bridge, piers, restaurants, black market... Unfortunately, the TV show losts 40% of details from the fiction, and the translation lost 40% more details, but I'm still very happy to watch it from Netflix and see my hometown!
cherrybombe17 OMGosh! I can't express, in text (but possibly in interpretive dance), how great this show is (thank you Netflix for letting westerners have access to it)! Mystery, Comedy, Romance, Supernatural, Drama, History, Suspense...all you could want but so much more. It's addictive and well balanced. Its strangely comforting because you grow so attached to the characters. It's main story arc is often in the background to the murders the brill team solve per couple of episodes - although that makes it seem formulaic, yet its not. The production and cinematography are high class. I think it's the characters that I fell in love with the most. My favourite, the female protagonist, kick's ass. I get a similar feeling when watching Dr Who or Sherlock. If you don't mind subtitles then you'll be happy if you watch this.
mccor-57866 Excuse my non-professional review, but as a person who randomly picks things on netflix that are suggested I was not only thoroughly entertained by this show, but, I think I like it quite a lot. It has an engaging and intriguing story, it has action adventure, really cool costumes and backgrounds and props, very good cinematography, and some sweet love stories. The only thing I have to say is: How could you do this to us? Leave us hanging like this in episode 24? We need another episode soon!
