I'm four episodes into season 1 of UCB (I decided to take a chance and purchase the DVD based on all superlative praised being lavished on it by users on this site)and I may have laughed twice so far. It simply isn't that funny. And believe me, I know funny.Relatively speaking, it's funnier than what passes for Saturday Night Live these days. I'd put it roughly on par with Mad TV, In Living Color and the State. But it is not fit to be mentioned in the same breath with Second City TV, Kids in the Hall, Monty Python's Flying Circus or that holiest of holies...Mr. Show. For the uninitiated, Mr. Show is THE greatest sketch comedy show in the history of television. Period. SCTV, KITH, MPFC (and vintage SNL) all belong in the sketch comedy hall of fame, but Mr. Show reigns supreme. If my opinion of UCB radically changes over the remaining six episodes on this DVD set, I'll happily post a revised follow-up review. However, I'd say that I find the prospect of this happening unlikely.Again, UCB is far from unwatchable. However it's equally far from the cream of the TV sketch comedy crop.

I do like UCB more than I don't... but I can definately see why it was cancelled. They tried to be an 'American Monty Python' but without the odd and unique british charm that the aforementioned possessed. While I can't claim to be a UCB junkie, I did watch it quite often during it's time as the "after South Park" showcase show for Comedy Central (and there's only been about 118 of those).Granted, they had some great sketches, but then again so did SNL during the Robert Downey Jr year. To my average, middle class, midwestern mind it was far to uneven to get attached to. Once it left the post-South Park time slot it lost me as a viewer. That's probably why it was cancelled... once it left South Park, it didnt have enough viewers who gave a damn to follow it around the CC schedule. To conclude, I thought the show had definate promise. I laughed more than I didn't. However, I believe that UCB was too inconsistent to survive without it's powerhouse 'South Park' lead in....

i feel very fortunate to have witnessed these amazing creators/writers/performers on television, and in person. their show is sketch comedy at its best. i have never felt so "into" a show as when watching UCB. the subtle humour, the bizarre twists and turns, the outstanding characters...all this, AND they are incredibly nice in person. i wish them the best of success in all they do, since comedy central (in what can only be described as the biggest programming blunder in television history) chose not to renew them for what would have been a terrific 4th season.rock on, UCB. if you're ever in my neck of the woods, you have a free place to crash.

To understand The Upright Citizens Brigade, you have to disregard rational thought and let yourself be carried away on a wave of insanity. Like Monty Python's Flying Circus, the show is loosely structured around a series of sketches that eventually run into each other. I can say nothing else except that the show is laugh out loud funny, and you will be crying by the end of the show.
