Synopsis

Sam, a soldier who had served in Afghanistan and Iraq, meets Amira when he visits her uncle, Bassam, who had served as Sam's Iraqi translator. Bassam and Sam have a special bond due to their time together in the war. Initially Amira does not trust him because he was an American soldier and her brother was killed by a bomb from American troops in the war. Sam's cousin, Charlie, asks Sam to help him with illegal hedge funds unbeknownst to Sam at the time. Amira is staying with her uncle Bassam since her father died. She sells bootlegged films on the street corner but is forced to stay with Sam after getting busted; immigration officials begin pursuing her. As the film progresses, Sam and Amira fall in love.

Irishchatter I would call this film a very easy seeing romantic movie I have ever came across. The storyline had so many surprises to it like Amira wasn't just an ordinary Muslim girl, she acted so chilled and hip unexpectedly . As for Sam, he locked a couple of teenagers to an elevator, just because he was cheesed off with them picking on him. It's a very odd twist that Sean Mullin wrote in the story. You wouldn't see a solider doing that kind of thing but I was wondering why it didn't show his flashback as soldiers would unfortunately experience.Anyways, I honestly thought Paul Wesley was James Franco. He has the attitude and the looks. He seriously needs to be in more movies and be in Franco's films. Then people will think he is James Franco's clone.Watch it peeps!
SteveMierzejewski The synopsis did not do this picture justice. I expected something with an 'embrace diversity' theme, which, to me, always seems to contradict the 'we're all equal as Americans' theme. In the end, what we end up with nowadays is the 'tolerate diversity' position. This pleasantly surprising film seems to make us look at some of the uncomfortable truths about American society through the eyes of two people who are somewhat dysfunctional within it.Sam comes back from a long tour of duty overseas as a Marine and can't really understand the new moral standards being supported by his family and friends. Amira doesn't really fit into the American society within which she lives or the Moslem background she was raised in. As someone who has lived overseas for many years, I can attest to the fact that you can see your own society more clearly when you return to it and can be surprised by the behavior that those who live there have learned to accept as normal. The movie looks at the problems of growing class separation, the pursuit of money at all costs, and the growing acceptance of insincerity as a necessary evil. That said, this is not a diatribe. There is no seizing of the moral high ground here. These viewpoints arise naturally and you don't ever feel like someone has an ax to grind. In fact, the characters themselves may cross, what some would consider, a moral boundary. I'm certain Amira's behavior would be frowned upon by most Moslem viewers and some Americans may question aspects of Sam's behavior. In short, both find solace in each others isolation within their own cultures. They embrace diversity at the individual level. The acting is good and the relationships are believable, despite what the synopsis may make it seem. It is certainly a movie that will make you consider your views on culture, wealth, and honesty a little more closely. Although some scenes may be a bit contrived, for the most part, this is a film that deserves more attention and is well-worth watching.
gomezm3 Amira & Sam is the story of two unlikely love birds running away together. It shows you who Amira is: a strong and independent Muslim woman who is in total control, even when she is looked down on by her peers. It shows you who Sam is: an Iraq war veteran who is trying adjust to present-day America after serving multiple tours in Iraq. It's Sean Mullin's directorial debut and it packs quite a punch for an indy picture. What stole the show for me was the 7-minute uncut scene in the middle of the film in which Amira and Sam share secrets, jokes, and kisses. It's in this scene that I fell in love with Amira & Sam. Take 90 short minutes and rent Amira & Sam on VOD or iTunes. Or take a trip to the silver screen and support this picture. You won't regret it.
Lisa K This is an amazing film by a Writer/Director to keep an eye on. Martin Starr is excellent, as is co-star Dina Shihabi, both of whom bring to life the truly uniquely individual characters in this story. Sean Mullen captures our hearts while also presenting to us a real dilemma many soldiers face after returning from years of courageously defending our freedom - maybe the rest of us have lost our way a little (or a lot)!To interweave romance, morality, suspense, intrigue, and culture - all with a backdrop of the city that we all love - is a true gift. I look forward to Sean's next movie. This one is a must see.
