TheLittleSongbird The only good thing I can say about Gryphon is the locations, they are quite nice to look at if never as sweeping or as wondrous as they could've been. However, everything else fails utterly. The music has a ponderous and somewhat generic feel to it, while the direction is pathetic, having no drive or passion whatsoever and the photography and locations while not as gut-wrenchingly bad as I anticipated did nothing to enhance the scenery and action. The gryphon is not only cheaply designed but also moves in a choppy fashion, further diminishing any signs of menace. In fact I have seen few monster effects for a TV movie in recent memory that were as underwhelming in every possible way than the gryphon here. The story is ridiculously predictable and far-fetched and just doesn't seem to have any life at all, and the script is stilted and corny to the point of rolling your eyes. The acting is roundly poor, with a lot of the actors coming across as bland, then again they are not given much credible to work with. And if you are looking for any likable characters, Gryphon is not for you, these characters are clichés and very irritating ones at that. So overall, just awful. 1/10 Bethany Cox
fearfulofspiders To call this a rip-off of The Lord of the Rings is a little far fetched. While the dialogue at times sounds re-worded, and one location (The Valley of the Dead) seems more like it's from The Scorpion King, rather Tolkien's Paths of the Dead. Gryphon is highly unoriginal, however, blended with terrible effects and wretched acting, making it a guilty pleasure at best.Amber Benson performs her lines with a very stale voice, focusing too much on tone rather than delivery. Jonathan LaPaglia sounds like he's got a throat infection, as his portrayal of the heir to Benson's rivaling kingdom. Larry Drake seems tired with his performance, and when he is lively it's just way too over-the-top. Benson's father is too lackluster; LaPaglia's mother seems too theatrical, which isn't exactly how she should be considering the role, and LaPaglia's father has no idea how to continue after small beats/pauses.The music is very redundant, with very little sweep. Though it is safe to say, considering the crap churned from Sci-Fi, it's the best score released for one of their made-for-TV movies. The special effects are laughably bad. The gryphon is so two-dimensional, how the filmmaker thought this would pass with an audience is beyond me -- but considering this is the same guy that made Heatstroke, don't look for any brains. All in all, with a romance sub plot that entangles itself in underlying incest, and a story that is hardly original, Gryphon is only good for background noise like the rest of Sci-Fi's productions. I highly recommend you skip it, unless you're looking for 90-minutes of unintentional hilarity.
Kenny-36 I have mixed emotions about Gryphon. I thought the idea was really good. The special effects of the Gryphon were terrible as much as I like Jonathan LaPaglia, he just read his lines as if he was still on The District where a lot of the other actors at least tried to give it a medieval accent. All in all it was an exciting movie, if not anything that would get an award and not the worst turkey I've ever seen, and I've seen some real good turkeys. I think the main thing if you haven't seen this film. It's what the viewer would like to see and how the viewer would like it. It's not for everyone, but as the old saying goes. One man's trash is another's treasure. I'm not going to throw it in the trash, but probably won't be taking it out of storage for quite a while.
talkabout-movies I am surprised that I haven't heard about any lawsuit yet against the filmmakers, I mean they even stole the Path of the Death from Lord of the Rings! I am sure this one ends up in my top 250 of worst movies, maybe even at number one. O gosh, I hardly have words to explain how bad this is.Bad acting, bad script : I have seen bad movies, for sure, but this one is so bad that beside my laughs about stupidities and terrible visual effects I felt eternal regret for even buying the movie on DVD.... result, I dumped it in the garbage can, glad to have never ever watch this again.I really won't recommend it to anyone at all. I would feel guilty forever, afraid of loosing my best movie pals.
